Endings...Beginnings...and the bits in between!

Lookingglass...
I heard Badfinger's COME AND GET IT today on the radio...I always liked that
McCartney song!...I've heard it a 'million' times, but I always thrill to
that chord progression at the end of the song. I suddenly realized how many
GREAT endings the Beatles put in their songs... the reverse ending to
RAIN...the fade out/in for STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER...the brilliant 'coda'
at the end of HELLO/GOODBYE...not to mention the 'chord' that ends A DAY IN
THE LIFE...etc...etc...etc.

This caused me to then think about the beginnings of some of their
songs...the chord that starts A HARD DAYS NIGHT...the 'rumble' of SHE LOVES
YOU...the 'feedback' that plugs you into I FEEL FINE... the first a capella
bars of NOWHERE MAN and PAPERBACK WRITER... etc.

Joe B...
Another good beginning was the fade in on "Eight Days A Week". I
don't think it had ever been done before.

I realize the Beatles did not invent the 'song', or it's structure, but they
did pay close attention to it's presentation... moreso than I can recall in
other songs before the 'Beatles' era (except of course the intro to IN THE
MOOD)...!

These musical 'devices' really grabbed your focus and attention, and then
held on to your ears till the last audible note of the song was sounded.

...and don't get me started on the bits in the middle...THINGS WE SAID
TODAY...NO REPLY...BABY'S IN BLACK...etc...etc...etc.

...all of this occurring... "When Songs Ruled The World"... //^)

JohnB...
Good post.

It is one of the great things about the Beatles' work that they paid
attention to every part. So many songs by other artists rely on a hook
to grab you but allow you to drift away in between high points. So
many of the Beatles' songs you just had to listen to every second, even
cranking the colume on the fade out just in case you missed something.

Other great intros:
Back In The USSR
Sgt Pepper ... and the reprise
Yer Blues
Get Back
All You Need Is Love

Other great outtros:
I Want You (She's So Heavy)
I'm So Tired
Here Comes The Sun
Old Brown Shoe
If I Fell

and all so different.

Lookingglass...
Thanks John.

I also like the 'flubbed' intro to I'M LOOKING THROUGH YOU... and the best
ending (!)... why, THE END of course..."the LOVE you take is equal to the
LOVE you make...".
