What a bizarre showing. Super freaky. Kinda cool. Sly was
waaaaay out of it.

Naaaahh. I'm sure that was his real hair. There are tons of black men
blond mohawks. ;-)

I was wondering about the whole tribute thing to Sly. He had a few good
songs 30+ years ago and achieved a certain amount of noteriety and
popularity, but did it really warrant any kind of a tribute on national
TV?
I don't think so.

You sound a lot like the dickweeds who dis The Beatles.
Sly Stone was a real innovator, and of course, he wrote many great
songs. Great band, too. Sly's a giant in the music world. Real
recluse for a long ass time, now.
What else you miss?

Sly Stone may not exactly have invented funk (that honor probably should
go to James Brown), but he was hugely responsible for developing it...
he sort of created the palette that was then used by everybody else.

Amen. Prince, Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo, Pharrell, as well as countless funk,
soul, rock, R&B, and hip-hop acts all owe him BIG debts. He was an
innovator and a true artist.
And I'm sure that will garner a lot respect among folks here on RMB... ;-)
He also happened to create more than just a few cool tunes 30 years ago...
by my count, he made several classic albums as well as several
genre-defining stone-cold classic singles... "Everyday People," "Hot Fun In
The Summertime," "Family Affair," and "If You Want Me to Stay" are funk/rock
at its best, in my opinion...
