Lookingglass...
I have read the word 'vamp' used in connection with playing the guitar...
specifically, Paul used the heel of his hand to vamp on his guitar.

thesonoftruth...
You are talking about "damping" or "dampening" the strings. To muffle
or mute.
An example of a "vamp" would be the fantastic 2-chord intro to "Tell Me
Why". They could have done that any number of times until cued by "Tell
Me".

Would someone please tell me what does this word mean?

Thank you in advance.

Dale Houstman...
It means to improvise, usually as an accompaniment. I don't quite know
why Paul would use the heel of his hand to do this, but there you go...

thesonoftruth...
My God, what's going on here??
To vamp is to repeat a brief section until that which is indefiinite is
ready to move on.
For example, in any Doors concert, when Jim wandered off into poetry or
would go fetal, the band "vamped" until he gave the sign to move on.
Same as in a Broadway musical when there is a change of scene or an
actor has some liberty with his part. A small section of music will be
"vamped" until the cue is given to proceed.

The only other definition of "vamp" is when Cher or someone dressed
like her sprawls atop a barroom piano. :)
