It seems to me that the Beatles had two different phases; one where they
would write more mainstram (i.e. Pop) tunes and the second and last phase,
where they would write more artistic, sometimes "esoteric" songs. Are there
two fan bases, one for the "first" phase and one for the second?

Yeah, probably.

There are those who seem to prefer the earlier 'get suits on' Beatles,
as opposed to the post - Dylan / Aronowitz Beatles (when they went
"stark raving mad", according to one observer). While I personally
prefer the "stark raving mad" period (Rubber Soul and on), I don't hold
the "more mainstream" era in disregard. It's like asking which is the
favorite of my children - they all hold their special charms.

Anyhow, the latter phase could not have been possible without the
former.

IMHO the question posed is like asking which do you want for dessert:
the chocolate, the ice cream, the cheese cake, etc. They're all great!

The Beatles were great during all their phases. It's the f-----
Beatles!!

Lookingglass...
I find myself listening to the Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour,
White Album (both records!) era more than any other... simply for the
musical exploration that occurred during this phase of the Beatles career.

But for sheer excitement, nothing can surpass their early years... SHE LOVES
YOU, CAN'T BUY ME LOVE, I FEEL FINE, HELP... that was the stuff of rock and
roll in the 60's. It is STILL exciting today.

But it is far more satisfying to take the perspective of hearing the BEATLES
from the beginning to the end of their musical career... WHAT A TRIUMPH!
