Oh, I wish I hadn't written that ...!!!

Another thread included one of Paul Simon's lyrics that he'd probably
not count amongst his finest achievements:

"Hey Mister Lamppost whatcha knowing, I've come to watch your flowers
growing"

Edvado...
That would be "Hello, Lampost...."

Sixties Gen...
Yes, he must have confused it with "Mister Moonlight".

It may have sounded ok then (though I'm not exactly *positive* of that)
but times move on, we all get older and ... well, I think Paul would
have written it differently today (or even five years later).

Joe B...
It fit the mood of the song perfectly. He was frolicking down the
street "Feelin' Groovy". The line is "Hello, Lamppost, what ya
knowin'". There was no "Mister Lamppost". There is nothing to be
embarassed about in those lyrics.

Now, "I'm going to love you till the cows come home", that's a
different story.

Lookingglass...
...yes...instead of "frolicking", he was feeling 'friskey'... ;^)

I believe I've read that John Lennon was embarrassed about the lyrics
to "It's Only Love" in later years. Any other examples of Beatles'
lyrics which would fall into the same category? (I can't imagine
anyone leaping to the defence of "All Together Now" but you never know)
Or Dylan or other noteworthy lyricists?

Amongst those who always seemed to write lyrics to a high standard were
Joni Mitchell (esp Blue thorugh Hejira) and Leonard Cohen (though I
only know about 50% of his output). Any cringeworthy lines here?

Or dare any of the songwriters amongst us offer examples of their own
wish-I-hadn't-written-that creations? (I'll pass, if you don't mind ;-)
