These bands are in my "objective" mind the 10 greatest bands of rock.
sequentially...
The order is not important so I will order them alphabetically.

Lack of artistic depth.
Jeremy Weissenburger...
|
Although I disagree with the "lack of artistic depth" statement about the
Beatles, I think that rock music can have it, but some people think that
rock should only be 3 chords and that's it. And that's a shame.
Dale Houstman...
|
3 chords is fine, but he didn't say it HAD to lack "artistic depth"
(whatever that is), but only that it doesn't have to have "artistic
depth" to be a good, or even a great song. And why is it a shame? People
have a right to their musical preferences, and those preferences won't
stop musicians from trying other things.
|
|
Allrounder...
|
ROFL.
Remember, those Beatles-albums were written in about 7 years time, 40 years
ago!!!. They evoluated from sing-alongs to mini-opera's. Lack of artistic
depth? They were the most innovative band at the time. And still their music
is an example for lots of musicians all over the world.

Get your head examined !
Tilvios...
|
Why? Because I have an opinion that may not be popular. Sorry, but
Ringo is/was just not in the same league as Bonham or any of the other
*sulliville*...
|
JB was totally overrated, sloppy, basic, predictable.
Teakbois...
|
proof?
*sulliville*...
|
Of course, learn how to play percussion and then listen to any Zep album.
Tilvios...
|
So you're speaking for all percussionists? I think not. Bonham has
been quite influential, and I imagine not a few have taken up the drums
inspired by Bonham.
*sulliville*...
|
You're right, but he was still overrated. Sid Vicious was influential...does that
make him good?
|
I guy I work with (about 15 years younger than me) who plays drum for
his church. His family pitched in and bought him drum lessons. The
guy he got lessons from plays and teaches many instruments, and is
living his dream making his living from music. At any rate he held up
Bonham to my friend as "that's the way you want to play drums".
*sulliville*...
|
It doesn't change the fact that he was overrated. There is nothing about his
drum playing that really separates him from any other drummer of the time.
Neil Peart...better...around the same time as LZ.
Bill Bruford...better...around the same time as LZ.
Carl Palmer...better...around the same time as LZ.
RAJA the real Emperor...
|
These guys were all technically better or equal to Bonham. That doesnt
mean they are
better. You are a type of guy who would suggest Satriani is better than
Page/Hendrix because he plays faster.
*sulliville*...
|
I'm the type of guy who would suggest you educate yourself.
Speed means nothing.
RAJA the real Emperor...
|
So what exactly makes Peart vetter than Bonham?
Wog George...
|
He looks after sick animals?
|
|
|
|
I stand by what I say. I love LZ, but JB didn't break any new ground nor was
he particularly dynamic. He just happened to be in one of the most popular R&R bands
of all time. Look at Floyd. No doubt they're awesome, and are great song writers, but
were any of them exceptionally gifted players? Gilmore's licks and rhythms are pretty
rudimentary, but obviously it *sounded* good.
Tilvios...
|
If you love Zep as you say, you would know that Bonham was a key to the
Zeppelin sound. The guy was a monster on the drums and he played with
passion. Look at early footage of the band, Bonham was playing his
heart out.
Maybe your tainted by knowledge of technique. Art is more than
technique and at least for me Bonham was a true artist. Zeppelin
wouldn't have been the same band with another drummer.
|
|
So your *proof* seems to be in question.
|
|
|
|
great rock drummers. In fact to me the Beatles all together sound a
bit thin and if wasn't for the superb song writing they'd have been a
mediocre band.
...
|
Listen to 'Rain' for example and you'll understand.
John Bonham started drumming in Led Zeppelin when The Beatles already
started to split up. It's another time and therefor uncomparable IMHO.
Of course Bonham was a great drummer, but saying Ringo sucked is just not
right.
|
Runnnerr...
|
And, following your logic, if they didn't have any songs to play,
they'd have never been a band at all.
Tilvios...
|
Who said anything about logic. After listening to these rock songs for
30 plus years, I know what I still like to spin, and the Beatles aren't
in that group. I appreciate the creative song writing ability of
Lennon and Mcartney, but like I said their muscianship sounds a bit
thin to me.
...
|
Yeah. Led Zeppelin sang a lot of 3-vocal harmony, had lots of different
musical style changes each album and have a Cirque Du Soleil tour coming
up....
Tilvios...
|
Hmm. The CDS thing is due to the song writing, which I said I
appreciate. Yeah they had more singers than LZ, big revelation there.
*scratches head* What was your point again?
...
|
Ringo was a good drummer.
Tilvios...
|
And vocal harmony and Cirque Du Soleil make that point how?
Allrounder...
|
You claim that LZ are better musicians -> they can't sing together.
Tilvios...
|
Muscian != singers. They can == but not necesarrily.
|
CDS -> the impact that the good musicians still make.
Tilvios...
|
You do realize that Zeppelin has blue grass, raggae, and orchestra
covers, right?
|
Do I need to spell it out?
|
|
|
And yes each Zeppelin album has a distinctive sound. Maybe you missed
that.
The Black Adder...
|
HOTH is one of the multi dimensional albums ever.
Runnnerr...
|
ROFL. This putz reminds me of the type of loser who pulls up in front
Wog George...
|
If someone is technically better, that would suggest to me that they have
greater ability and can do more complex things with greater proficiency. If
Person A is more proficient on an instrument that Person B, that makes
Person A better. There are no two ways about it!!
Seth Jackson...
|
I couldn't disagree more. I could care less how complex their playing
can be. I care how good it sounds to me. Satriani is far better
technically than George Harrison or Jerry Garcia, yet I find the
latter two to be far more expressive and enjoyable. To me, that makes
them better.
|
|
Wog George...
|
This is a different argument again. I agree that notes played 50
milliseconds apart are not necessarily better than notes played 500
milliseconds apart, and speed for the sake of it is often to compensate for
lack of technical ability.
As the topic appears to be about drummers, could you please explain to me
how Neil Peart, Bill Bruford and Carl Palmer are all equal to or better than
John Bonham from a technical perspective (ie they have greater mastery over
their instrument) yet that doesn't make them better?
*sulliville*...
|
NP, BB and CP are more creative, diverse and can adapt to many different
styles. JB can bang on his drum all day....well, COULD have.
One amazing thing that separates a good percussionist from a great one, is
the ability to be subtle and at the same time be complex. Good example,
Up The Downstairs. I challenge any percussionist to come up with
a reason why this isn't an absolute work of art (I'm referring to the
new version with actual drums)
JB could play, keep time, but he couldn't invent drums or even reinvent.
JB couldn't do more than keep time and throw in the occasional fill
or two. There is no Zep work that screams brilliant percussion,
innovative rhythm, master of timing.
RAJA the real Emperor...
|
How much of Led Zeppelin II have you heard? There are many fine
examples of Bonham being very creative in many songs in that album
itfelf. I guess not much. Are you passing this judgement after
listening to Led Zeppelin greatest hits collection?
|
Even Phil Collins was better.
|
|
of a high school at 3:00 PM with Led Zeppelin blasting out of his car
radio hoping to pick up high school girls.
The Black Adder...
|
And you play "Love me Do" to pick up girls right?
|
|
|
...
|
Compared to The Beatles? Yeah, I must have missed that.
Nice though LZ is.... :-)
|
|
|
|
Oh yeah, John Bonham, as good as he might have been, was never in
Ringo's league.
Tilvios...
|
Opinions are like assholes. Everyone's got one.
Runnnerr...
|
Word around here is that you've got two of them.
|
|
The Black Adder...
|
You *are* a Beatles fan. Or more appropriately a "Beatard". Let me make
it clear enough for you. All the drummers from the other 9 bands on the
list (Bonham, Collins, Bruford and White, Rudd, Ward, Paice, Watts,
Moon, Mason) are *much better* drummers than Stinko Starr.
John Lennon once asked whether asked by some dopehead, whether Ringo
was the best drummer in the word replied back, "He is not even the best
drummer in the band"...LOL
DTSmith...
|
Once again, as most people already know, that was a sarcastic swipe at
Paul McCartney, not a knock on Ringo.
|
Runnnerr...
|
Hey Blackie, isn't it about time that you came up with your latest top
10 list.
It's been at least few hours since your last one.
The Black Adder...
|
And you should start listening to other bands apart from Beatles too.
Do you still think you are the 5th Beatles member?
Runnnerr...
|
Now just how would you happen to know what bands I listen to Blackie?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Black Sabbath
Sjoerd Bakker...
Deep Purple
Sjoerd Bakker...
|
Good group, but would not be in my top 10.
|
Genesis
Sjoerd Bakker...
Led Zeppelin
Sjoerd Bakker...
Pink Floyd
Sjoerd Bakker...
|
Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett are in my top 10.
|
Rolling Stones
Sjoerd Bakker...
Who
Sjoerd Bakker...
|
Good group, but would not be in my top 10.
|
Yes
Sjoerd Bakker...
|
Reasonably good group, but would not be in my top 10.
|
*sulliville*...
|
What does that have to do with *greatness*?
|
Dale Houstman...
|
...and The Small Faces
...and The Shaggs!
|
Your comments?
Yelps...
|
Because there is a order of influences and copycatting in heavy rock, for me
the "greatest" list has to consider how these groups evolved in the meme
pool.
So the Greatest list IS (objectively)
1. Yardbirds
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Beatles
4. Rolling Stones
5. Who
6. Pink Floyd
7. Jimi Hendrix Experience
8. The Byrds
9. The Doors
10. Cream
Dale Houstman...
|
The Doors? For the life of me I can't see why...
Lookingglass...
|
...me either. But where are the KINKS...???
dave (...based on a novel by a man named Lear...)
Yelps...
|
Honorable mention....I mentioned them in a few posts later. In their early
days they did contribute to the foundation of heavy rock as did the Animals
and Them. Those groups would be ahead of Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly and
the later US bands.

Cuz Yelps was stoned out of his mind there for awhile.
|
Yelps...
|
hmmmm, I guess you has to be there. The Doors were very heavy.
Ehtue...
|
This is my point. You had to be there. And stoned.

Were it not for altering consciousness with the en-masse use of visionary
plants and their by products and related molecules, in those days, none of
this
"heavy rock," would have happened. Music would have stayed non-heavy,
non-psychedelic and mundane.
Sjoerd Bakker...
|
And they were just great musicians and songwriters. In many ways a
perfect Rock band; they only lacked a bass player, IMO.
Ehtue...
|
"I'm gonna love you till the stars fall from the sky for you and I."

Early Shows:
The very best shows I saw in the 60's---and I saw everything--were the
Yardbirds, the Doors, the Byrds, Love and Jethro Tull. Zeppelin shows were
never quite as good as their earlier recordings in albums 1-4, the best Zep
show I ever saw was the Rose Palace, small enough Venue to really appreciate
it and they were at their performing peak. The first Zep shows I saw at the
Whisky were pretty rough. the ones I saw later were formulaic and lacking
spontaneity.
Cream tended to be drab onstage, too repetitive with the long extanded
guitar licks in every song, like Clapton was stuck in a particular fingering
and Cream was stuck on their singles, besides he blew my eardrums for 3
months, but I saw one Cream show in Hawaii during the Wheels of Fire Period

Would have helped absolutely, I felt the same way at the time.
Morrison was so diabolical though, it didn't matter. The writing was
brillint, lyrics and instrumentals and the delivery on stage was better then
on record.
Sjoerd Bakker...
|
Based on what I heard I would not say that, but they probably were the
best live Rock band ever if you would go by average ratings for all
concerts. Sometimes worse than on record and sometimes better.
Actually seeing them live may have added an extra dimension, I'm sure,
but I never did.
Ehtue...
|
I did. They were much better on record. But I dont' hold that against
Sjoerd Bakker...
|
-
:-). I think it really was about equal. I heard very good live
performances.
|
them.
|
|
|
that was unforgettable.
When I saw the first Pink Floyd concert, it was ok, pretty amateurish
Yardbirds, the Doors, the Byrds, Love and Jethro Tull and the Who .always
had great shows.
Yardbirds were the most evolved musically. They invented heavy, psychedelic
rock..On stage, they were the most exciting of all.
Pete Townsend sounded funny playing the guitar--he had the air guitar act
down, but his three chords and silly attempts to sound like Jeff Beck were
embarrasing.
The Kinks and Animals were always interesting on record but their shows were
spotty.
The Doors were incredible from the onset. The moment they appeared they
stole the show from everyone. Jim Morrison was probably the most powerful
heavy Rock singer in history.
The Byrds were great performers. Very electric, original and charismatic.
Although I never saw it, I think the Beatles in their very early days stole
the Rock and Roll show from everyone at the time.
Every Hendrix show I saw was a disaster. He was alwasy too messed up.
Stones concerts I saw were on large venues. They were good on stage but
lacked Jeff beck, and Keith Relf's harmonica so they bugged me. They kept
reverting back to a pop sound. lol

Anthony...

No, they're your comments. Mine are totally different altogether.
|
Sir Psycho Sexy...
|
Take Deep Purple, Genesis, Rolling Stones, and Yes off the list and start
from there...

sequentially...

Comments? Yes, does it matter? Somebody writes these types of lists at
least once a week.
I respect your opinion.
