When I use the internet, I cannot receive any phone calls. Is there a
device that allows one to stay online while also being able to receive
phone calls? Thanks in advance.

It's called a 'second phone line'.

Most providers have a basic DSL line for under $20/month, and that's
less than a second phone line, and faster, too.
|
|
Needless to say, I'm on dial up.

Doesn't Enabzrk and AT&T offer high-speed Internet connect via the
phone lines now that doesn't interfere with normal phone use?

DSL
or Cable Internet Service

Why do people assume these things are universally available?

You didn't say it wasn't available to you. You simply asked a

The original poster was asking about something for dial-up.
You simply asked a

question and are getting answers. One of the answers to your question
is DSL or Cable. No need to get worked up when people are giving
reasonable answers to your question.

I'm not worked up. I'm simply puzzled that, given that much of the
continent still has no DSL service, that people assume that anyone on
dialup is there by choice.

Isn't "no DSL" the reason why DirecTV is touting "Hughesnet?" I don't
understand this stuff, but that's what I thought it was.

Satelitte access is ridiculously, insanely expensive.

I know of two. Callwave and Buzme

I used Callwave when I had dialup. While it let's you know you have a
call while keeping you connected, you still have to end your
connection to be able to make a call. In fact, it was nothing more
than an answering machine with caller ID. It sent the caller into an
answering machine, but let me know the number so I could call them
back. The only true way to be able to talk on the phone while staying
connected is with DSL or cable modem. (and anything else that's come
out that's not dialup).

Bellsouth has its own. Ask your phone company.

The latest 56down / 48K up standard allows the use of call-waiting.
You can put the modem "on hold" while you receive a second voice call.
Then when you're done, you resume your modem connection.
Me, I'd rather just upgrade to DSL, which uses frequencies 0 to 8000
hertz for voice calls and 8000 or higher for data transmission
(simultaneously).

If you're on dialup because you think high-speed Internet is too
expensive, consider this:
If you get high-speed Internet, then you can buy Vonage phone service
piggybacking on it, which can be cheaper than paying your phone company
for phone service. They offer unlimited local *and* long-distance
calling for $25 a month. That saving can compensate for the additional
cost of high-speed Internet. The combined cost of high-speed Internet
and unlimited long-distance calling may be cheaper than your dialup +
phone bill you're paying now.

If available in your local area. They're not for us, but we have Qwest
who has a pretty good deal on DSL/phone service packages.

supposedly, v.92 is supposed to let you put your internet connection
"on hold" when you get an incoming call. You also have to have call
waiting on your phone line. I say supposedly, because while my ISP
made it sound like its the best thing since sliced bread, I couldn't get
it to work.
