They were _recorded_ over 5 years apart. They were actually _written_
around 9 years apart.

No doubt the Beatles underwent a staggering transformation over a short time.
What made it
particularly amazing is that this wasn't just any band -- this was the top band
in the world essentially
going off the rails.
But when you dig down below those top acts, you will find many artists who
developed just as quickly
and just as thoroughly overhauled themselves and their work.

Thanks Jeff... I was about to say that... The Beatles did it first... they
paved the way for others to "develop"............ ;^)

And music has undergone amazing fast transformations in other contexts.
For instance, it was less than 6 years from the time that Beethoven was being
instructed by Salieri to
the first public performance of the Eroica.

His next great leap took a little longer -- there's a fifteen year gap
between the 8th and 9th symphonies.

It was less than 6 years from the release of Kraftwerk's "Computer World" to the
creation of techno in
Detroit.
These are transformations that easily rival what the Beatles did.
In any case, evolution isn't he be-all and end-all of musicianship. Many
musicians stay within a narrow
niche for their entire careers, paintstakingly refining their craftmanship. An
artist like Gillian Welch
hasn't evolved terribly much stylistically over the course of four records, but
her music has become
infinitely deeper, subtler and more refined.
