I think one song, though NOT underrated, doesn't get discussed much...
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE... for me is one of the most remarkable songs ever
written. It is a perfect marriage of lyric and melody... they belong
together... I cannot imagine the melody without the lyric or the lyric
without the melody...the melodic line is an exact musical image of the
think the song is up there with his STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER... I AM THE
WALRUS... A DAY IN THE LIFE... all absolute brilliant examples of the "art
of song".
When the lyric for Across The Universe is sung, each line of poetry should
come out as one breath... again imitating the sentiment of the
poetry..."words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup..."...
what a brilliant image is painted with those words. Every line of lyric
paints breath-taking images in my mind... and sung to a lilting and poignant
melody... a melody that I can see in my mind's eye, trailing the poetry of
the words.
A magnificent song... deserving of our admiration for John Lennon's
"art"......... ;^)
