What instrument carries the main melody in the song (it's not a sitar)?
Orlando Enrique Fiol...
|
Sarangi, a bowed stringed instrument with sympathetic strings.

Ian MacDonald's book did not mention sarangi but it mentioned dilruba.

The dilruba is also a bowed stringed instrument with curved frets like
the sitar. Skin head, sympathetics, and the like:
Beautiful, no?

Looks similar to a mini sitar the way the strings are placed.

Yeah, the only major diff is the hourglass shaped body (for the bow to
ramble) and the skin top (which is like the sarangi), The sitar has no
skin top. And I guess all those modernized machine heads - the sarangi
holds to the past with wooden pegs...

Lewisohn mentions the dilruba, with later overdubbing by same.
And look at this mother of all tambouras:
I always wanted one of those droners...

What Indian music CDs would sound like this Beatles song (preferably
with no vocals)?
