Hmmm.... I mostly like it. But I think Prince's guitar solo and
associated antics are a bit over the top. I'm not sure that I agree
with comments such on this page:

that Prince "blew everyone away". To me it seems that Prince
substituted "gosh wow" postures and licks for real substance.

Cosmik Debris...
I liked the little licks and stuff the guy on the far left did (don't know
who he is).

Unless I'm mistaken, which happens even when I'm sure that I can't be
mistaken, that's Michael Mann. He played the "George Harrison" parts at
the "Concert for George", and I've seen nothing but praise for his work
doing that. I haven't done a close comparison of the original WMGGW and
the live version above, so don't know how closely he was sticking to
the original.

steve...
I *think* that the player at the Concert for George was called Marc Mann
(not Michael).

david_wrigth...
Whoever he was, he was excellent, and his sound was great. He managed to match
the original nearly perfectly.

As to Prince, he was somewhat difficult to hear. His guitar was a little to
thin sounding. Clearly he can play better than his pop reputation, but a
better musician would have improvised around the melody and not just standard
thrills and frills.

Twang...
maybe.

IMO, Prince's solo was cleverly built on the original Clapton solo. I
think it was right for the tune, and it sounds like he was playing from
the heart, not showing off (any more than Clapton did).

Anyone who has heard the "Around the World in a Day" or "Under the
Cherry Moon" LPs knows Price knows a thing or two about the Beatles.

If there was anything wrong with the above performance, it's that Jeff
Lynne's vocals were not quite right for the bridge of this song. And
that's not a knock on Lynne, I just don't think his voice sounded
comfortable on this particular tune.

Cosmik Debris...
OK, thanks. He wasn't flashy but he sure sounded nice.

JMK...
Not sure I agree. I think there was a fair bit of lyricism in the solo,
at least
in small bits. Yes there were licks, but they were high energy ones,
and with
Petty and Lynne looking half asleep, the tune could have used
something.

I think Prince played and dressed exactly like Prince, with lots of
flash and showmanship. I would say the same things about Hendrix. That
said, Prince is an underrated guitarist and a stellar musician (though
I'm not really a fan).

I would rather watch him pour his energy into his playing than wait to
see the rigging that keeps the comparably boring Tom Petty and Jeff
Lynne standing up (and I AM a fan of those guys).

The fact of the matter is this- show business is about the show, and
people go to SEE a show. That we are talking about Prince's "'gosh wow'
postures and licks" proves to me that it was the only intersting thing
that happened in an otherwise dull and lifeless (though accurate)
performance.

Simply put, I don't care about a Beatles cover. Prince made it
interesting. Would anyone even go to listen to Tom Petty cover yet
another Beatles song with Jeff Lynne, if Prince hadn't gotten invloved?
No one seems to be talking about the guy who copped all the preceding
solos; and that guy did a VERY good job of imitating the originals.

Perhaps he should have worn a cooler hat, and done more "gosh wow"
stuff?

fattuchus...
WoW! I didn't know Prince was such a cool guitarist.

Would've been nice to hear Dhani Harrison sing a line or two as well!

How do I save this?
