Cat Whisperer...
I have an account with free.teranews (one time charge of $3.95)
It has worked flawlessly until a few days ago with Outlook Express.
Now I get errors often and Teranews support tells me they are not even set
up to work with OE!

They suggested I try a real newsreader software.

William Hamblen...
I use slrn, but that's not much help, I know.

Mozilla Thunderbird, which is free, has a newsreader.

I just tried News Rover 11... seems OK, but I want to know what the rest of
you guys use!

OE is just so much easier, anyone have some input on this?

feverish...
It's mainly made for *nix, but there's a 'doze version and it rocks.
Easy to use, easy to set up. The only drawback is it does not post binaries.
If you *must* post binaries, use something simple like powerpost.

I use Pan and just love it. When I have to use machines that can't run Pan
or don't have it installed I use Mozilla Thunderbird. It's not nearly as
easy to use as Pan, but still isn't too bad.

Ted Davis...
The premiere reader is probably Forte Agent. For many users, the less
sophisticated free version Free Agent is more than good enough.

Jeanne...
Seconded. I've used the freeware version of Forte Agent for years, and

Joy...
I've used OE for years.

highly recommend it. I've never felt the need to use the full feature
version (I think the paid version will also read email and handle RSS
feeds, among other things)

Ted Davis...
For me the telling feature is that the paid version uses a newsrc file
to keep track of what messages have been read. This means I can
synchronize my work and home instances by transferring a single tiny
(less than a kilobyte) file between the tow locations instead of many
megabytes of data files, and perhaps even registry entries.

annoyed...
FYI, Agent 4.x does not use a newsrc file. Agent 3.x and earlier did.

Re Free Agent:
Forté has offered Free Agent for more than 10 years. With the release of
Agent 4.0 we have decided to retire Free Agent and focus on providing
Agent customers with exciting new features and timely upgrades.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird myself. Have at times tried Free Agent and
Xnews, but never took to them.

Some people use Thunderbird for both news and e-mail and swear by it
as a news reader - I swear *at* it as a news reader, but I'm spoiled
by Agent.
