An approximately 800 lb. manatee made its way over 700 miles up from the
Mississippi Gulf Coast earlier this week and was spotted by a couple of
fishermen. Rescue attempts have been underway since Tuesday. The resumed
attempts this morning were hampered by poor weather conditions. The manatee
hasn't been spotted since last evening.

Purrs the critter is OK. They're occasionally spotted up here!

The rescue teams sent up from Florida still can't locate it. Speculation is
it left the Wolf River harbor where it was spotted and made it's way back
into the Mississippi River. The water temps are really too cold for the
poor thing even this early in the year. Maybe if it hit the river again
it's going south, towards home. I hope so.

The water probably isn't so cold that he can't make his way downriver
to warmer water near the gulf. Let's hope he gets turned in the right
direction. I THINK that there is some artificially hot/warm water along
the Tennessee River and maybe he can luck into a patch of that, near a
power-plant, if he can't get downriver. That would be temporary
"shelter" until the rescue people find him. Of course, the easiest
place to get into hot water around Memphis is down in Tunica, MS. but I
don't think Sam's Club would let him play.

Good luck to a gentle fellow mammal.
