Pat...
A local insurance agent has been sending me a postcard every month urging me
to call for a quote. Finally I did, since car insurance is coming up for
renewal next week and home owner's in three weeks, I figured, what the heck.

They offered me $20k more coverage on the house and $25k more on the
contents, and the same rate on same coverage on the car, for a lower premium
than my current company!

Magic Mood JeepŠ...
I would be a bit leery - and get a *written* guarantee that the rates won't

Pat...
I am also a bit leery. But if they go up I can just switch back to what I
had before.

Would State Farm stoop that low?

Magic Mood JeepŠ...
Probably - and so would All State....American Family (my own company)... and
nearly all the insurance companies.

Pat...
Do they have some way of knowing what the other companies are charging you,
so they can come in with a lower quote?

jmcquown...
They sure do, sugar! (Licensed agent talking here.) There is a database
they can plug into which supplies insurance and past claims information,
sort of like if you were a criminal and they ran your fingerprints through
AFIS. They know if you've filed claims before and for what. The rates are
based on the spread of risk based on your claims history. Rather like
credit history, to use another example. So yes, they may quote you a nice
low rate right now but unless it's in writing that it won't go up after 6
months or whenever the renewal term is, I'd be wary of something that sounds
too good to be true. GET IT IN WRITING. By the way, a "guaranteed
renewable contract" is not a guarantee that the rates won't change.

Matthew...
I have has state farm for year here in Florida. Never had a problem in
fact ever 6 months that we don't have a problem we get a discount. I
insured everything with them with max options. Every year my stores receive
a discount. Never had a problem when I had to file claims due to the 2004
hurricanes. They never thought of canceling us

EvelynVogtGamble(Divamanque)...
Probably! (It's a long way from being my "company of choice".)

MaryL...
I have had State Farm coverage for 30 years, with nary a problem (although I
never thought of them as a low-rate company).

jmcquown...
State Farm is comprised of individually owned agencies. They can and they
will if they want to.

go up in 6 months!

I bet that's the kicker - rates will go up.... sooner or later (preferably
sooner, in their eyes).

EvelynVogtGamble(Divamanque)...
How are they on paying claims? (Sometimes there's a REASON

Pat...
That database includes the exact amount of the premiums I've been paying to

MaryL...
I frequently get letters from Allstate asking me to call for a quote, and
sometimes they simply *include* a sample quote. They do have the basic
information concerning my current coverage and rates.

the other company?

the premiums are lower.)
