I was flipping through my issue of Cat Fancy and came across a list of
events in February. I thought to myself, "Of course there won't be anything
remotely near me" (meaning, not even in the city of Memphis). Not only was
I wrong but it's less than 3 miles from where I live! So, either on
Saturday 2/10 or Sunday 2/11 I'll be hopping over to the cat show at the
community college. I've never been to a cat show before so this should be

fun.

By all means, if you've never gone, go to the cat show! It's even a
guilty pleasure for an anti-breeding fanatic like me :-)
Can I make a suggestion? You probably already know this--but don't
dare even *look* like you're going to touch one of the show cats. The
owners get absolutely hydraulic if you even get too close to them. I

I'd go nuts at a cat show if I couldn't touch the kitties. I think my hands
would fall off from the anguish of wanting to touch them all and not being
allowed to do so!
|
learned this when my daughter showed Orion for a couple of years. Even
the exhibitors use hand sanitizer constantly before touching their own
cats.

I have heard this from other cat-loving friends (who don't participate on
this ng). It will be difficult but I think I can manage :)
Looks like they have a special category for handicapped cats. I think
that's nice!
|
A few of the exhibitors were really friendly. But I found most of them
are there for their cats, and the judges, and the other exhibitors.
They treat the public like a necessary evil.
There will probably be some rescue org. there with their cats. You'll
enjoy that. And, the vendors, oh my. Lots of fun things to look at.
I told DH when we retire I think we ought to travel the cat show
circuit, and we could sell the cat trees he makes. Or take orders for
custom-built ones. Maybe I'll see you in Memphis in 10 years, LOL.

LOL depends on where in Memphis (or if I'm even in the area in 10 years!).
There are some places I just cannot bring myself to drive to. It's nice
this show is less than 3 miles down the road.
|
The closest cat show Orion went to was Missouri. He did very well, got
his premiere. Then he started sitting with his back to the judge, and
ended up retired. Daughter said he started to act like he didn't enjoy
it. Giving the judge "the ear" didn't help his career, LOL.

If I was ever at a show, I would be an Orion fan. Just love the
bigness and the tufty toes.

And I've loved the name Orion for a cat, ever since seeing the first
Men In Black movie. :)
(I just spent the last hour readingh all sorts of interesting things
as a result of the web search for "men in black" orion cat. :))

I wish you could see Billy up close. I'm going to take pics of his feet just
for you.

Billy is a most beautiful cat. While you're taking pictures anyway,
how about some of those tufty ears as well? ;)

Your wish is my command! It shall be done, as soon as I can manage it.

Add a "me too!" to the people who'd like you to report back. I found
out there's a Cat Fancy cat show here March, and I'm interested in
hearing about your experience at the one in Memphis.

I've been to a couple and I enjoyed myself. Be advised, it's best to
leave your checkbook and credit cards at home. Bring only enough cash to
pay your entry fee and a snack if you want. :)

Not to worry, Victor :) The info I got said there will be "people food" so
I'll have a couple of bucks in my pocket in case I get hungry. (Doing the
art shows with John, I know those food vendors usually sell garbage and
charge a fortune!) I'm not in the habit of carrying around cash (or using
credit cards given my financial situation). I'm hoping maybe there will be
some giveaways like fridge magnets or whatnot but I'm not really expecting
that. It will just be nice to look at all the pretty cats!
From what I could figure out there's a category for handicapped cats, which
I think is very sweet. January's Cat Fancy magazine had a nice article
about a cat who had no rear legs (poor thing had been run over by a car and
the legs amputated). This cat apparently runs around on its front legs
without any problems at all, like a person walking on their hands. Very
pretty grey tabby! I'm glad they have a category like that.

I went to a cat show once and my eyes got itchy, but not enough for me
to leave the show early. I was twice tested negative for allergy to
cats. Maybe so many cats under one roof was the difference. So be
prepared for an unexpected allergic reaction.
