Yesterday, as I was walking home from the shops, I saw a wagtail hopping
around on the ground. I thought it had a stick or a leaf that it was

LOL, before I saw the photo, I thought "wagtail" was a code word for
d-pet. :)

LOL. Could be. But the Wagtail is aptly named, since it wags its tail up
and down all the time while running on the ground. We have them on the
island (the pied ones), and they tease the cats by running in front of
them, then taking off when the cat lunges. I'd never seen a wagtail hunt
before, though.

toying with, but then it fluttered and I saw it was a huge moth! The
wagtail was so occupied with its prey that it hardly even noticed me. I
could walk right up to it and it just played with its prey. That's what
seemed so strange to me: the moth was still alive and the wagtail was
toying with it, just like a cat with its prey. The moth was huge, its
wingspan was longer than the wagtail's tail. I hope the wagtail finished
it off and took it to feed its babies. It would have made a meal for the
whole family!

I get pied wagtails in the garden. Lovely birds. Also get grey wagtails down
on the banks of the stream.

We have pied wagtails on the island, too. They look very funny, running
along the cliffs and wagging their tails.
