Lap Full of Fur

Bliss for a cat slave and her owners on a chilly January night: A comfy
chair in my living room after I'd had supper and washed the dihes;
watching a DVD with a cup of steaming hot tea in easy reach. On my
feet, socks and woolly slippers. A nice warm afghan covering me, and
in my lap, a pair of peaceful, drowsy kitties, purring from neck rubs,
ear scritches and repeated stroking. =o) We're having windy, chilly
weather here, and I'm fulfilling my function as heated, padded cat
furniture. =o) Francesca was in such an advanced state of bliss, she
was drooling. One must take time to enjoy the little pleasures of life!

I didn't know it was possible to have two lap fungi at once. How
blissful.

With my feet up on the footstool and with the chair reclined, there's
plenty of room for two lap fungi. We spent another night in front of
the TV this evening in the same manner as last night. But oof! =o)

You know, something you said earlier about Nina having a "belt" made
me think kitty patterning in that area. I've looked at so many RPCA
posters' cat pictures lately that I've been beginning to see patterns.
It seems to me that most cats have a very similar underlying bicolor
patterning scheme.

For example, the underbelly has a greater tendency to be white, but if
the belly is pigmented, its strongest tendency is around the
midsection, where Nina has her "belt". My Betty was a tuxedo where
the black didn't quite meet there, which gave her a "zipper". Karen's
Pearl is mostly all black in that area, leaving her with a "bikini".
Pam's Huey has a tabby spot right in the middle of his belly there.

Another area where cats tend to be white is around the neck. Mostly
black cats can get "lockets", "necklaces", and "shirtfronts".

I love the white "shirtfronts". All 3 of mine have that.

Sometimes the white has spread a lot, leaving the cat a "mask and
mantle" or "cap and saddle".

A friend of mine has a black & white cat whose upper part of her face
is all black, and the lower part is all white. It looks like she's
wearing a mask - and her name is "Zorra". :)

Another area where Nina has usual, but unusual pigmentation is her
snout. Nina has a tabby snout. Tweed's boyfriend has a tabby nosie,
Joyce has her Smudge, and so on.

The chin is another interesting area. My Betty had a "beauty mark"
there. Marina's Frank had a "beard". Other cats with more fully
pigmented chins include Susan's Otis, who has a full beard, and
Julie's Lacey, who has an even fuller orange triangle.

It's so nice, this experience. Boyfie will only come up on my lap when I am
very quiet and watching TV. It's such an honour that I dare not move,
especially if he purrs his tiny purr too. He hardly ever purrs. He does a
curly thing on my lap, so trusting. He will sometimes pat my face.
I had unexpected visitors tonight who I've never met before. They were
cat-friendly.
Kitty came from the kitchen and was scritch-tarting all over them. Boyfie
came from his upstairs sleep on the spare bed to go out for a wee and said
"OMG, OMG, there are *people* here!"
One of the visitors said "OMG what a beautiful-looking cat" as he shot
outside and shot back inside to the spare bed.

It's such a shame that I am the only one to know how lovely he is. Not just
in his appearance - he is very handsome - but in his temperament. He does
not have a scratch or bite in him. Unfortunately he is too shy to show
himself to anyone except me. If he hears the doorbell ring he immediately
insists on going out the back door.
One or two of my friends don't believe he exists.
