Mark Edwards...
Now here's a story about a brave cat who guards his turf (grin):

Another link with good pics-

->Declawed Tabby Cat Scares Bear From Back Yard
->
->POSTED: 8:57 am CDT June 9, 2006
->WEST MILFORD, N.J.
->
->At least one bear doesn't want to know Jack.
->
->Jack is a 10-year-old orange-and-white tabby in West
->Milford, N.J. And when the cat spotted the bear in a
->neighbor's yard earlier this week, the clawless kitty
->let the bear know who's boss.
->
->The bear scurried up a tree and eyed the cat for 10 to
->15 minutes, while Jack stared and hissed from the ground.
->The bruin inched its way down before jumping off and
->running away.
->
->But Jack chased the bear into the brush and up another tree.
->
->That's when Jack's owner realized what was happening and
->called her cat. The bear took off as Jack rubbed up against
->its owner and the neighbors.
->
->Jack's owner, Donna Dickey, told The Star-Ledger of Newark
->Jack considers the area his turf and doesn't want anyone
->in his yard.

That's hiliarious! Brown bears are more fierce than their cousins the black
bears. This must have been a young one. And what was it doing in New
Jersey???

Kreisleriana...
They've got bears up the wazoo in Jersey-- it's a constant problem.
THey recently reinstated an annual bear hunt. And just in the past
month, two unfortunate bears were shot for trespassing. They are
mostly young ones, who've just left their moms and are drawn to
people's garbage for an easy meal. It's all very distressing.

Monique Y. Mudama...
A friend of mine lives up in the mountains; her property leads into
national forest land. Anyway, last night a bear apparently got into
her shed and distributed her trash all around her two-acre lot.

The rules for the neighborhood require that all trash be kept in a
closed trashcan, inside a shed. She does have a bear-proof trash can,
but she said she got lazy about locking it down all the way. Oops.

I guess she'll be more careful in the future ...

John F. Eldredge...
I haven't seen any account stating the color of the bear in question,
so, given that it was on the East Coast, I would presume it was a
black bear. Even so, there is quite a difference in size. I guess
that this would be described as Psychological Warfare.

Pat...
I didn't see any mention of the bear being brown in the article. When I
first viewed the article at the page from which it was taken, there was a
photo with it and the caption stated that the bear was black. That photo has
now been replaced with a poll asking if you think your pet would chase a
bear or be too scared to chase one.

Magic Mood JeepŠ...
"Brown" bears come in many different shades, black being one of them. Don't
ask me how to tell the difference - I think it's the size, maybe?

CatNipped...
I can't believe that anyone lets a declawed cat roam outside! :<

annoyed...
That's one tough tabby! Here's a link to the write-up from the CBC news
site:

Giovanetti, who said she's never bonded with the neighbourhood cat, said she
was always a little afraid of Jack.

"Now, I think I fear him more," she is quoted as saying.

Jo Firey...
It happens all the time. They declaw the cat to protect their house, and
end up with worse behavior problems than they had to start with, so out they
go.

And cats that are crippled in any way have to become very territorial. When
all you got left is a hiss and a growl, you perfect them.
