Goopy eyes

badwilson...
Vino never had goopy eyes before, ever. But I think he might have
picked up something in quarantine. Which really makes me mad, they
force him to be there for a month to see if he's healthy and he comes
home less healthy than when he went in! Grrrr!
Anyway, it's not severe, but I've been having to wipe the corners of his
eyes every day. Is there anything I can do about it? Will it clear up

Adrian A...
It did make me wonder how effective the quarantine was when you said he had
contact with other cats. Purrs for his eyes to clear up quickly.

badwilson...
He didn't have contact with other cats. When he got out and ran down
the hall, the other cats were still behind their solid doors. Although
they could stick their paws out a bit. But I'm sure the workers there
going from one enclosure to the other can easily pass stuff along. It's
all quite silly, really.
His goop is brown, there's not a lot of it, but still noticable. I'm
going to keep an eye on it for another week and if it's not better then
we'll take him to the vet. I just don't want to unnecessarily disturb
him right now, he's had a lot of upheaval and I just want him to have
some peace in his new territory.
It could also be because he's been out in the (fully fenced!) back yard
quite a bit and maybe he's got some dust in his eyes or whatever.

Magic Mood JeepŠ...
It could be any of those things that everyone else has said - but it could
also be allergies. Not only is he in a new house - he's in a whole new
country, and there may be something in the air that's irritating his eyes.
Maybe not allergies, but just more 'dust' (and no, I'm not trying to rag on
*anyone's* housekeeping abilities) than he's used to, so he gets the goopy
eyes. When Betty, Barney and Bam-Bam were little and still being kept away
from the big kitties (except Unka Ping) and the dog, Betty like to spend a
lot of time under the bed, and we have what you might call dust *monsters*
under our bed, so she had goopy eyes every morning (her nickname was
boogety-eyes). but now that she doesn't go down there quite so often, she
doesn't get the goopy eyes.

If you're worried, have a vet check him out.

on it's own?

polonca12000...
I hope it will clear up on it's own.
Lots of purrs and best wishes,
Polonca and Soncek

Marina...
What colour is the goop? If it's clear or black, it shouldn't be
anything to worry about, but if it's green(ish), he might have an eye
infection. He'll need eye drops in that case. Have you looked around for
a vet in the area yet?

sriddles...
Britta, it could be conjuctivitis. Not terribly serious, and responds
real well to treatment, but *really* contagious. I bet he caught it at
the quarantine facility.
Another thing that causes goopy eyes is the kitty-herpes virus, which
is also very contagious and chronic. Boots has that. But usually when
she has an outbreak, she also has sniffles with it.
I'm betting on conjuctivitis. He probably ought to see a vet. I'm not
sure if or how long it takes to clear up on its own.
Poor baby. Keep us posted.

Helen Wheels...
Probably he's just caught a little cold, but it sounds like it'd be a
good idea to get the orange one acquainted with a local vet just to make
sure.
