When I had kittens with flu, I found steam inhalations helped
enormously. Get a bit bowl of boiling water (DO NOT ADD ANY
DECONGESTANTS TO THE WATER AS THIS CAN GIVE ULCERS) and hold her over it
with a towel over her head so she inhales the steam. Hold her there for
as long as she'll tolerate it, and then wipe her eyes and nose.
It helped the kittens tremendously.
Purrs for her to be feeling better soon.

Thanks Helen. One of the things the Vet mentioned was not give her
decongestants but she didn't tell me why. Now I know. Yesterday when we
went into the vet she looked into Lacey's mouth for ulcers because she
was drooling. She said she didn't see any although her tongue was
looking a little glistening. She's drooling much more today. Is there
something I can look for to make sure she doesn't have ulcers?
Thanks for the purrs,
Julie and Lacey

When Tiger had ulcers, they looked like little raw spots on his tounge.
That's the only way I can describe it.

she breathed out through her mouth. It sounded like she was pushing her
breath out of her lungs and she'd begun to drool. So of course I bundled
her up and took to TED for the second time in two days. Her temp had gone up
to 103 from 102 yesterday, still not too high, her lungs still sound clear
and her heart sounds fine. She was slightly dehydrated so she got subQ
fluids and a shot of benedryl. We've started her on antibiotics in case of
an infection.

Definitely purrs for Lacey, and for the boys not to get it too bad,
too. Poor little thing, having to breathe out her mouth and get
bitter meds.
|
When Sam was sneezing they gave me Chlorpheniramine tablets which is an
antihistamine. I was warned with him that it was extremely bitter and if he
bit into it and tasted it he would foam at the mouth. Foaming at the mouth
was an understatement! Anyhow, I was told to use this with her tonight. I
tried to give it to her by myself and it was a disaster. At least before she
started foaming she spit the pill out so that I knew she hadn't taken any.
When Rusty got home he wrapped her in a towel and held her. I put butter on
the pill and got it down her throat.
I'm not sure it's helped any. She's still having trouble breathing and she's
still drooling. I just feel so very sorry for her. I was told it would take
10 - 14 days to resolve . They told me I could bring her in anytime if
I felt she needed more subQ fluids. If she doesn't get better I'll probably
take her back on Saturday. We've been relegated to the back door into a back
"isolation" room. This is probably a smart move since this is obviously a
contageous cold.
Anyhow, if there are any spare purrs could Lacey get a few? She is just such
a miserable little girl right now.

Poor little girl. Of course there are always purrs-a-plenty for any
kitty in need.

There's always a spare purr or two somewhere, so Lacey is most welcome to
them. Sending them now.
(Her Meowmie and Paw probably need a few too, so there's some extras for you
as well)

Thanks Vickie, we appreciate all the purrs we can get. btw, is Jean all
right? I haven't seen anything posted from her in quite awhile. I should
send her an email, but just thought about her.

Big purrs for her. Stinky is susceptible to upper-respiratory
glitches, too.

Thanks Theresa, the purrs help alot! She wishes she had a winkwink to
cuddle with. She says she'd feel much nicer if she had someone to
cuddle. She says her HarmonE photo can be seen at:

Thanks Tak, the Vet tells me that since the boys have already had it they'll
have developed immunity to this particular bug and won't get it again. I
hope that's true because I'd hate for Sam to be this sick - except when Sam
had it I was able to give him Albuterol and Flovent which is a steroid so I
think that helped him.
She's so tiny and petite even though she weighs 10 lbs right now, but when
she sneezes she sneezes about 10 times and her entire body shakes with each
sneeze. Its just heartwrenching to watch and know there isn't anything I
can do to help.

I've never had a cat get respiratory problems, but I'm sure it must be
so worrying for the cat-parent. I remember that seeing a video on
Fritz the Brave made me feel so sorry the kitty!
|
I wonder if anyone has any experience with Vick's vapor plugins. I used this
once with Sam and it seemed to help some when he was having trouble
breathing. I've done a web search and I don't see anything to indicate
toxicity. As a matter of fact in most cases I've read it as a deterrent for
chewing on things like cords and furniture so it must not be toxic. I just
wonder if it would help in any way.
I appreciate your purrs and concern, Tak.

Maybe using an humidifier in the room she is in -- hey, we do it for
people. Purrs for her healing. MLB

Thanks for the purrs and I'm going to buy a good humidifier today. If
nothing else it will help this winter when the static gets high. I hate
reaching down to pet a cat and shocking their little ears.

The humidifier can't hurt.
Also when a fur kid is stuffed up, sitting the the bathroom holding then
while you steam the room up with the shower works just that same as it does
with a bare kitten.
I can't count the number I times I've done that with both.

It could be worth a try. Another thing that might help is a humidifier.
When Nanki-Poo had a bad cold, the humidifier seemed to help him breathe.
Just be sure to get one that stays cool.
Purrs for Lacey and the boys, and for you.

Thank Joy, I'm going to go buy a new humidifier/vaporizer today. The one
we have is old and I'm sure there are better models out there. We
appreciate the purrs.

You got it, Julie. I remember one time Mojo (RB) somehow managed to
get a nasty URI, and all the other cats got it, too. It was a
miserable time for all, and I still am sure there is cat snot on the
walls I've never been able to clean off.
Purrs for Lacey to feel better and for her worried mom.

Poor baby. Can you sit in the steamy bathroom with her for a few
minutes? Or have a vaporizer you can run? Purrs for the poor girl :( I
sure hope everyone gets better soon.
Julie Cook...
|
Thanks Karen. Last night I used a Vick's vaporizer that I have and she
actually came out of the room - maybe because she didn't like the smell.
This morning she was still sneezy and drooling. I'm concerned about
mouth ulcers at this point. I managed to get another antihistimine and
her antibiotics down her before I left for work. I hope she gets alot
of rest today and feels better tonight. I appreciate the purrs.
