It was Saturday evening - laundry day at our house. The white things
had just finished in the dryer and I started getting them out and
folding them up. That works a bit differently here than I suspect it
does in most places.
Smokey has figured out that the dryer just after a completed cycle is a
supremely warm spot for a nap. So the removal of clothes from the warm
dryer is done by opening the dryer door, removing one item, closing the
dryer door, folding said item and putting it in the basket. The process
is repeated until the dryer is empty.
R-R-I-N-G! R-R-I-N-G! R-R-I-N-G!
Answered the telephone and it was work calling with a problem and would
I help? OK, I *am* on call so I guess I gotta. After a half hour the
problem was fixed well enough to wait until Monday for a permanent
resolution.
OK, back to folding clothes. It had been long enough that the clothes
had time to cool so I thought I'd do a 5-minute "touch-up" cycle to make
the folding easier. Pressed the button to start the cycle and headed
out of the laundry room.
WHUMP, THUMP, THUMP!
There's a problem here. There's no shoes in the dryer to be thumping
around. SMOKEY! Dratted cat.
Ran back. opened the dryer door and found Smokey covered in underclothes
except for his head, looking confused. "I've napped in here before and
it didn't do that! Did we have an earthquake, Pop?"

The same thing happened to a friend and her cat, except the spin in
the dryer scared the poop out of kitty. Yuck.

Reached in and removed Smokey, checked to make sure he was OK and set
him down to go on about his business. He wobbled out of the room to beg
pity from Mom.
And I haven't yet figured out how he got in the dryer without my seeing him!

Oh my, what a scare! I'm glad I don't have a dryer in my flat. I use the
laundry room of the building I live in.

Note to Smokey: "Did you learn anything???"

Teleportation? I'm convinced that must be how Melisande
spent the (very cold) night outdoors, a week ago Friday.
Unfortunately she didn't figure out how to teleport back in
again, nor was she anywhere in evidence when I went out to
look for her several times during the evening.
