Strange Kneads

Lacey has new behavioral characteristics. I call it frantic kneading. As a
Christmas gift I bought the cats a padded lap blanket. On one side is thick
fleesey material and on the other side a very soft velour. I love the velour
side but the cats prefer the fleese so I turn it fleese side up on my lap.
It provides protection to my legs when Lacey or Sam want to knead.

Lately Lacey's kneading character has changed. She lies on the kneading pad
and begins kneading slowly, digging her claws into the thick fleese.As soon
as she's in the kneading zone her back legs want in on the action. The next
thing I knw she's kneeding with her front paws and her back leg is pushing
and pumping in the air looking for something to kneed. She turns in frantic
circles trying to find something for her back leg to kneed on. It is the
funniest thing I've ever seen and one day I hope to have my videocamera
nearby so that I can record this bizarre behavior.

Sounds like an extension of the "bunny kick" behavior. The one that has
left a few of us with fairly deep scratches when we thought we were playing

I still have scars from where Persia bunny kicked me when we were playing.

Persia still "kneads" my side when she comes to bed to sleep with me. She
knows I'm her momma, I feed her I take care of her and play with her and
give her toys. But boy can those back claws hurt!

I sometimes wonder what kneading really means to them. Both mine will knead
frantically if I am sitting quietly with a blanket or a fleece on my lap in
the evening. It's a bit of a competition for them to get up there. Kitty
will try and get there first and will knead furiously and purr her head off
at the same time. If Boyfie gets a look in, he will knead with all four
paws and purr his tiny purr which is the best he can do, poor lad. His
purr doesn't suit him. He should have a very loud purr, but he hasn't.
Kitty has an enormous purr despite her very small size. I can hear her
downstairs when she is purring upstairs.
She purrs when anything pleases her. Upstairs is the spare bed which she
likes to sleep on, and when she does, her purrs are heard downstairs.
