[OT] Plebian Tastes

All my life I've heard how wonderful filet mignon is - rich people seem to
rave about it, it's always the most expensive thing on the menu. Well,
believe it or not I've gone my whole life without tasting it (I'm not a big
red meat fan and it always seemed too dear). Tonight, there was a sale on
it at the market - 4 nice, large pieces of meat for only $10, so I though,
what the heck, let's give it a try.

I *HATED* it! The bacon-y taste was yucky, (I don't like hickory bacon - or
much of any kind of bacon, but I thought if I took it off first it wouldn't
affect the steak).

Ummmm.... "Bacon"? SFAIK, "filet mignon" is simply a
particular cut of beef tenderloin - you can cook it any way
you like. I've had it in restaurants broiled with
mushrooms, or topped with a variety of sauces (like
bearnaise or bordelaise), but just plain works fine, too.)
I can't imagine "doctoring" it with a bacon wrap - they
usually do that with flank steak, or one of the less
expensive cuts. Filet mignon is usually allowed to stand on
its own. (Sounds like your butcher got "creative" and had
to sell it at a lower price to move it.)

Rob loves Filet Mignon while I've never had it. I'd just rather get the
steak and shrimp platter instead. Can you tell that I love shrimp? I
keep planning on trying it, but those misquite grilled shirmp alwasy
sound so much better...

BTW I do love bacon burgers, so I'd probably like filet mignon. But the
shrimp with lemon butter are calling my name...

OB. I offered my steak to the owners and they all turned their noses up at

I have to agree here. I love the *meat* of filet mignon, but the bacon
totally ruins it for me. I love bacon too, but I find that it's flavour
is just too strong and overwhelms all other flavours. When I eat meat,
I want to taste the meat, not bacon! For this reason I also never eat
bacon burgers. Bacon is for breakfast, IMO, and nothing else.
