Hi there:
My friend thanks you all for your ideas.
They have decided to drive the cats in their crates.
They had already figured out that one child/adult/cat would be best per car
and that the cages would be locked to prevent impulsive unlocking! They
will eat at rest stops but bring the carriers out of the cars while they
eat. Their youngest cat can wriggle out of anything so they will not chance
walking them on harnesses. She is sure that the youngest will meow every 3
seconds for the duration of the trip.
Thank you again!

That sounds great! Most cats stop crying after about 20-30 minutes. It
would be a good idea to get some Feliway and spray the carriers about 20
minutes before putting the cats in them. If the cats seem frightened or
distressed, it can also be helpful to place a towel or lightweight blanket
over the carrier so the cats don't see the outdoors "rushing by."

I wonder if anyone's thought of making a 12 volt Feliway diffuser for use in
cars, I would think there would be a market for it.

Or maybe a battery-operated diffuser :)

If those diffusers work like those plug-in air fresheners, all they're
doing is just gently heating the chemical. So if you want to diffuse
Feliway in your car while you're in it, why not just make a Feliway
hat! Use your own body heat instead of electric heat as the diffuser.

You can get similar things at aromatherapy shops where you place some oil on
a strip that is then heated in the lighter slot of your car. I suspect that
that would work just fine.

Just think about that what would happen when it ran out ;-)

Be very careful!!! Aromatherapy/essential oils can be toxic to cats. Be
sure that you know what you are doing before using any of these around your

I meant - spray the Feliway on the blank paper part of the diffuser and
diffuse it that way. You may not need a special Feliway car diffuser if the
aromatherapy diffuser can be adapted for Feliway.

That's a brilliant idea, actually. Get right on it, willya? LOL
I wonder if anyone has ever asked the Feliway company about that?

Preferably one that their humans have used to dry themselves.

Maybe they can get some tranquilizers for the youngest cat from the vet.
Lots and lots of purrs and best wishes for the move to go smoothly,
