Yellow Lab who Won't Eat His Dish

Mark Kane...
Hi everyone. I've got a 5 year old Yellow Lab male who more and more is

White Monkey...
OK, well, Saskia's always got stuff on her lips, you've got me there.

shelly...
harriet gets lip accretions, as well. it makes it all the more
entertaining when she tries to pretend she didn't get into the trash.
it's kinda hard to pull off the Pure and Innocent look when you have a
tissue stuck to your lip.

White Monkey...
Saskia usually picks up incidental objects that let us know she has been
inspecting the dining table or the coffee table: a baby spoon, for example,
or a large dried and fried chili pepper (served her right), and in the park
she collects leaves.

sighthounds & siberians...
Katrina, I sincerely hope you got a photo of the spoon stuck to the
lips.

White Monkey...
I wish I had!

shelly...
oh my! harriet gets leaves and paper stuck to her lips, but never
anything as substantial as a spoon. what did Saskia think of the chili?
i found that my cats actually like them, the hotter the better. i
haven't asked harriet for her opinion.

sighthounds & siberians...
My dogs all have fairly tight flews, thank doG; there's no telling
what they might pick up around here. This all reminds me of a Pug
living with a greyhound we placed. His tongue hung out rather more
than the norm and would drag on the floor...

Mustang Sally

White Monkey...
I knew a dog that had that happen, but it was a Pekinese....

White Monkey...
Well, she didn't really react much, but she was trying to rub it off on her
front leg, whereas things like grocery store receipts and post-it notes tend
to remain totally unnoticed by her.

White Monkey...
Luckily, she has outgrown that phase, now that she's grown into her lips. We
just have to watch our clothes in the park, be careful after she eats or
drinks, and be especially vigilant if she's excited for any reason, good or
bad. Oh, and duck if she shakes her head.

she also gets crusty, chapped lips, which is gross. she didn't get the
memo stating that Boxers should be drooly.

White Monkey...
I'll trade you--when Saskia shakes her head, DUCK! Fling your arms over your

You're just not thinking straight. Someone sold Rottweiler drool ( I kid
you not. It was on Leno on Wednesday night) on eBay. Winning bidder paid

head for good measure. We keep monitor screens covered when not in use, and
the state of the walls, TV screens, mirrors, and ceilings is a real shame.
Well, not so much the ceilings now that we've moved--they're much higher
here. And she leaves a happy trail of happy slime wherever she goes when
she's happy--usually on people's nice clothing.

Suja...
Pan's not terribly drooly, but even she always finds it necessary to drool
on people wearing nice clothes. The harder you try to keep your clothes
clean, the surer bet it is that you will be well and thoroughly slimed.

It's myth that all dry food is good and all wet food is bad.:)
In the UK, you can get additive free, organic and hypoallergic
wet food such as Natures menu, Nature diet, Denes, yarrahs.

Mark Shaw...
That's as may (or may not) be, but the OP was apparently posting
from somewhere other than the UK.

Mark Kane...
True, I am from the US...Missouri to be exact.

I have been reading the thread as messages come in and I certainly would
like to give him the best quality natural food. The Dick Fan Patten food
looks interesting, but I don't see any place around here that carries it.

Does anyone have any experience with the Chicken Soup for the Dog
Lover's soul? If so, is it quality? I tried dry only (Chicken Soup) last
night and he didn't even touch it. Just sniffed it and went on to beg
for my food. I got tied up in something and forgot to pick it up, but he
still has not touched it. Will try the pickup method starting tonight.

"I second that emotion."

into too far back history, here is the most recent sequence:

He used to eat Nutra kibble straight into his dish, and sometimes maybe
with a little water on top acting as "gravy". He got bored of that and
stopped eating, so he tried "Chicken Soup For The Dog Lover's Soul"
kibbles. With a dish of Nutra and Chicken Soup kibbles next to each
other, he went right for the Chicken Soup and ate that for a while. He
then got bored of that after a couple of months and went on another food
strike. He would not eat it so I tried getting some cans of Kibbles and
Bits and mixing it in with his dish.

He went for that for a few months and that was fine, but then he started
not eating that much either. I tried Chicken Soup cans mixed in with
the Chicken Soup kibbles and he sometimes eats that. I've also tried the
more expensive Merrick cans mixed with dry and sometimes he'll eat that
and other times not.

The bigger problem is that more and more in the last couple weeks he
won't eat any of it. I got him 12 cans of various Merrick flavors and
Chicken Soup cans for Christmas which I mix with the dry every day.
Lately he'll stick his nose on it, and then come back to the kitchen to
sit and stare at me. I've even tried kibbles on one side of the dish and
Merrick on the other in which case he will either sort it and eat most
of the canned, or not touch any of it. It's sad that he won't eat the
$2/can dog food and it is just wasted.

For treats he gets MILK-BONEs as well as Pedigree Breath Busters. He
does get some human food which may be part of the reason he is not
eating, but back when he stopped eating the Nutro and even before that
when he wouldn't eat other things like Hills, he wasn't getting much
human food at all. Now, I usually make him some scrambled eggs in the
morning and he gobbles those right up. He also gets a little bit of
fresh sandwich turkey/ham for lunch. Not much, but a few trimmings.

I am guessing that the common answer would be that he's spoiled because
of the human food. I think that's part of it, but again, he always used
to be picky about kibbles and get bored with what was put down for him
even when he very rarely got human food. The solution was trying
different kibble brands which he got interested in for a while, but then
got bored with. Now if he won't eat the expensive cans with the kibbles,
then what is a guy to do?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

-Mark
