Perry Templeton...
Just why does a dog lick me? Is it a show of affection..a show of

Suja...
The biggest licker I know is a boxer named Brindi, who does it out of Joie
de Boxer, near as I can tell. She'll be running by some poor unsuspecting
human, boing to give a face wash, and is off again, big grin on her face. I
really don't think she can help herself.

Pan licks my hands, which I take to be some sort of grooming behavior, and
she gives tiny little kisses to the face, which she only does when she
really likes a person, and is in a happy affectionate kind of mood.

Rocky...
Lots and lots of reasons. As you wrote, you probably taste good
to your dog - salty. As with many things dog, it can develop
into a habit and reasons go out the window, so if you don't like
it, don't let him do it.

Friday is not really a licker, though he sometimes likes feet.
He has developed one odd licking habit - when I get out of bed
in the morning, he gives a single lick to my knee and then walks
away. "Yup, tastes like Matt, so it must be the same guy who
was here when the lights went out."

superiority or maybe dominance. Do I or someone else taste good? Is it a
nervous tick?

Shelly...
Without additional information, my best guess is that she's determining
whether you should be served with red or white.

I am not asking if it should be allowed or not. That discussion may come
later...
I want to know if there are different theories on why they lick. I will say
that I'm not particularly fond of being licked, but they all seem to lick
for different reasons. And lick different too. Nervous, or quiet and
soothing...

Just curious.
