Political incorrectness and dog names

Amy Dahl...
I'm interested in people's opinions of naming a dog "Brown Sugar"
after the Rolling Stones song. A lot of the dogs in this line are

shore...
I'm puzzled by naming anything after any Rolling Stones
song. Never did care for those guys.

Amy Dahl...
Wow. Hard to comprehend.
I bet you're not a big fan of Ozzy Osborne (sp?) and Black Sabbath,
either.

shore...
More than the Rolling Stones, but not huge. Couldn't tell
you why.

I do have endless admiration for Keith Richards' continuing
ability to draw breath, however.

Amy Dahl

I'm kind of touchy on race issues but wouldn't have a
political problem with it, with the caveat that I'm white.
Aesthetic problem, however ...

karsan...
This is the United States I do not see why you cant name your dog
after a rolling stones songes. My dog name is Joe.

shore...
She wasn't asking for permission.

Amy Dahl...
I am sure I "can" name her that. I hope to compete with this dog,
though. There are some old-time dog names that stand out as
really racist. I hope if mine is perpetuated in record books and
pedigrees, people will more often think "clever name" and "great
song," or at worst "geez, what bad musical taste"...not "wow, this
sport is racist."

I don't think the name will hurt you with show judges but you can never
tell. In any real competition, like herding, agility or schutshund, it
would not matter at all but in anything decided by judges it could be a

Rocky...
I may be misunderstanding you. Are not herding, agility, and
Shutzhund decided by judges?

Anyway, I judge agility, and sometimes I don't know the dog's
name, so I find it more effective to judge based upon
performance.

problem.

Robin Nuttall...
Wha..? "Show judges" won't know the dog's name. At least in theory, and
almost certainly not the dog's registered name unless and until the dog
itself becomes well known. Dog names are actively hidden from judges,
and judges do not judge NAMES.

bill.reich...
Having helped a friend schlep dogs to and from shows, I know that
judges sometimes know the names of the dogs that they judge. I don't
know why it would matter and I don't imagine it would with an
overwhelming majority of judges.

Robin Nuttall...
Sure. But not officially. No judge better be caught in the breed ring
calling a dog by name or in any way showing that they "know" the dog. It
implies favoritism. And if they *did* call the dog by name, it wouldn't
be by the registered name but the call name. Which is why it's a CALL name.

Now in reality, especially in the specials ring, some dogs will be
known. Some will be known extremely well and will have been judged by a
judge a number of times. But the pretense of anonymity is there anyway.

I think it's a very cool name and it doesn't seem racist to me. But then
again I too am white...

bill.reich...
Seems like a good name to me also.

named for songs: Monday is Blue Monday, Stormy is Stormy
Monday, Ozzy is Crazy Train, and there's another Rolling Stones
dog whose name I forget.

Sire is Brown Trout, and the breed are known as "brown dogs,"
so "Brown Sugar" fits really well. I'm just totally unaware if

Personally, I LOVE it! Not that I'm any judge of good taste, of
course.

Do you like the name Joe? My dog name is Joe I picked the name Joe
because is it easy to remember.

there are still people who are offended by that song, its title,
and references to it, or is it generally accepted as part of our
culture?

Paula...
I think it would be seen as a cultural reference or a baking
ingredient and either way it would not be a problem.

This is providing the puppy survives her dam's mastitis.

Oblivious, as usual,

Warning: before giving advice, know that I may or may not
choose to follow it....

I'm not white.. nor black.. nor a judge:

I think Brown Sugar is a cute name.. I love the taste of brown sugar
(and molasses!!) I was born in 1970 if that helps any.. I think of the
Stones as "cool, but antiquated".. in my own antiquated mind ;-)

Then again.. my last 3 animals ( Zelda "dog", Link "cat", and Gannon
"cat", have been named after video game characters ;-)

'Sides.. anything *has* to be better than Brown Trout.. even my kids
know *that* is euphemism for poo
