Dumbest thing I saw this weekend

I spent most of the weekend at the Northern New England
Sleddog Symposium. Lots of people brought dogs, mostly
Siberian Huskies (woohoo!). I'd guess there were about
60-70 Siberians there. And someone brought a cat.

This reminds me of the old Warner Brothers' cartoon where a nasty
little boy drops a cat into the middle of a dog show.

Maybe they don't like cats?
While we're on the subject of dumb things people do...
Lady w/kid: Oh, what an adorable puppy!
Kid: Can I pet him?
Owner: Sure, she loves being petted
Happy dog, happy kid, lots of tail wagging and giving kisses to the kid
Lady: How old is your puppy?
Owner: 5 months.
Lady: What kind of a dog is that?
Owner: Pitbull

I'd go with, "We think he's a lab mix".
Speaking of lab mixes, I saw a dachshund x lab cross yesterday. And get
this, the dachsie was the mother! Probably 30 lbs, rich red coat, long
back, short legs, maybe a little lab-ish around the head but only if you
knew what you were looking at. Very cool dog, and very into the
EarthDog Fun Day events. His owner referred to him as a dachs-ador.
|
Lady: (Screaming at her kid) Get away from that dog!
Yanks kid's arm, stalks off in a huff, muttering about how people shouldn't
have dangerous dogs in the public, especially where there are kids.

For what? Loose, or in a carrier?

There was a RABBIT show in the next building from our flyball
tournament this weekend. A girl brought one into the building, under
a blanket. Yeah - now THAT'S a good idea.

I haven't a clue why they brought it. Someone was carrying
the cat around in her arms. A lot of mushers have toy dogs
as house pets but this was just one of those "Huh?" things.
sighthounds & siberians...
|
Yeah, that's a big ol' "huh?".
|
There was a red, bi-eyed Siberian puppy that was about 4
months old and just adorable.

Although our Siberian population is likely to decrease considerably in
the near future, I have to say that the thought of a 4 month-old Sibe
puppy, even a bi-eyed red, does not tempt me in the least.

Hah! There were a lot of adolescent Siberians there, too
(there were bikejoring, scooter, and rig races Sunday
morning, plus people brought younger dogs to get them used
to traveling and to the mayhemious atmosphere at mushing
events), and it's always a good nopuppiesinmyhouse reminder
to spend time around a yearling Siberian. However, I was

Oh yeah. Tasha was about a year old when we got her, and though I've
not had a Sibe puppy, I have to believe that adolescent Sibes aren't a
whole lot better. With the pups, at least you don't have the
attitude.

Adolescent Siberian Huskies can be *awful*. I think you've
seen that photo of my shredded bedroom, with Emmett still
pulling on some bedding. And he's grown up to be a very
composed, well-behaved dog. I can't imagine Eclipse at that
age.

I remember that photo well. I also remember coming home to find that
Tasha had opened a five-pound bag of either flour or bread mix and
strewn it all over the kitchen, and chewed up some brand-new nebulizer
equipment for good measure.

talking with the people who sold me Image and they described
a possible upcoming breeding that definitely made me sit up
and think "boing!"
sighthounds & siberians...
|
Boing as in you may get a pup?
shore...
|
Maybe, if the breeding happens and a bunch of other
contingencies.

Be sure to take pictures of the destruction.

Pretty much everybody thinks this, too, but the more time I
spend around other people's dogs the more I appreciate my
own.
BTW, a Chinook club had a booth at the trade fair and boy,
those are nice, even-tempered dogs. I'm sure they left the
alligators at home, but still, these were awfully mellow
fellows.

I don't believe I've ever seen one.

If you didn't know what you're looking at you'd probably
think "Lab X." There's someone local who breeds them and

Now that I've seen pictures of what appears to be Chinooks, I'm still pretty
sure my first thought would be 'mutt'. So variable in type, anywhere
between shepherdy looking to lab looking.

|
I think that after you saw one in person you'd recognize
another. There's variation in the head (particularly the
ears) but the overall build and coloring are very
consistent.

when I saw her with a dog at obedience classes and asked her
if her dog was a Chinook she was extremely surprised and
said that everybody looks at the dogs and assumes they're
mutts. http://www.chinook.org/

It's interesting that some parts of the standard are quite specific,
but almost anything goes when it comes to the ears.
