When Maui is in his elevated carseat (connected with a regular chest harness
to the inside of the seat), he frequently tries jumping out of it. The

slack is very short, probably about 4 inches so he just gets his front feet
out and then is stuck till I'd lift them back in. I was wondering if anyone
ever tried using a gentle leader or a halti in this case since the problem
is him pulling away from the clip. I am really considering one of them for
this purpose only (he does not pull when on a leash with his regular
harness). I was looking at both online and was wondering if anyone has

sometimes when I take him places, it is just so he can be with me in the car
and when that happens, he doesn't even get out of the car. for example,
when I go down the road to the bank or post office. the whole trip takes
about 20 minutes. if I'd have to crate him in the back of the car, I might
as well leave him home. for longer trips, or when we go to the park or
someplace he gets out, crating might work.

sometimes. I guess the problem would arise should I ever get in an accident
(which I didn't think of).

Stop doing that.
You can teach him to sit still or crate him safely. Where's Cali

Yeah, I guess I need to work on that again. He used to be better about it.

during this?

Cali is either home or in a separate seat with her dog seatbelt that
connects to her chest harness. She is very good in the car. She just lays
down and sleeps till we get somewhere. In fact, yesterday for the first
time, she sat up in the car and looked out the window. She had a look of
amazement on her face watching the cars and such.

cheaper but other than that, I couldn't really seem much difference. I
think the gentle leader is more well known, maybe it's better? Any input is

Use a special dog harness designed for a car. I got mine

I like the GL and my trainer prefers it to the Halti. That being said, I
wouldn't think you would need either for a toy poodle, and I wouldn't use
one in the car at all for fear of dangerous entanglements.

yeah, I was just thinking of trying to stop the pulling and not really about
what might happen should we get in an accident and have his only restraint
being around his head. yikes, I don't want to do that!

I think Janet's crate suggestion is a good one. Maybe you could get
something small that could still fit in the elevated seat, so that he
could still see out?

the car seat is pretty small so I don't think anything would fit in it. I
will try either to shorten the buckle so he can't even get his front legs
out (of course then he can't lay down either, he has to sit) or put him in
the back with the other dog car seat thing I have. That way he isn't in
anything to jump out of and he would be able to sit or lay down without
being able to reach off the seat. the only problem with him in the back is
his carsickness might decide to return when he is no longer elevated. I
guess I shall see.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
