Stylish yet dogproof kitchen trash cans?

First off, I am not a fan of stainless steel, so I am having a hard time
wanting to spend $100 for a trash can I don't like. Oh, you might think,
how much does a person have to like their trash can? But I have a policy
about not bringing anything into the house that isn't beautiful to me. My
current trash can is beautiful to me and Queenie also finds it quite
appealing, as it's the kind that swings open, making access quite easy.
Many days I remember to put it up on the counter before I leave the house,
but the days that I don't remember seem to be the days when things are
particularly rough out in the world and I am especially NOT in the mood to
pick up garbage when I get home.
So I must have one with a secure lid and I am wondering what others with
garbagemongering pups have gone with... don't be afraid to say stainless
steel, as if that's the reality I need to face, then I will eventually face

FWIW, dogs are garbagemongerers at heart. To that end, my
garbage enclosure is behind a non-stainless steel cabinet door.

My dogs are weird, they very rarely go into the trash. Only time they do is
when I have the flu, and they go for the tissues. But not much even then,
only one or two, and only if I'm out all day. So not much of a problem,
either way. I'm lucky. :)
Now, I do have a trash compactor, which would solve anyone's trash dog
habits. I can open from the handle or step on the foot pedal. But there's no
way a dog could get into that thing. Only problem is I don't usually put
food/smelly things in it, as it does such a great job of compacting, that it
takes awhile to fill it up. So it's usually the food in either the compost
bucket, or in smaller trash bags, right into the outdoor trash cans. This is
for US, not the dogs, as I can't stand smelling day old food, sitting in the
trash.
Hope that helps,
MaryBeth

Alas, I lack the cabinet space. I realize that you are the wrong person to
complain about this to.

I'm a big fan of step-on openers. Puppy Emmett figured out
that if he can hit the pedal with both feet (similar to the
way he punches through snow to get at moles) the lid flips
up, but he still can't get into the trash because it closes
as soon as he lets go. So, it's a game but the trash is
still safe.

Eenteresteeng. I just assumed that supersnout would nudge the lid open and
get in that way -- has Emmett tried that? Is that too hard? I personally
would enjoy watching the Queener step on the pedal and then see the lid
close before she could get anything out, but if anything could drive her to
OCD, that would probably be it. Plus, I probably wouldn't get to see it
anyway since she doesn't get in the trash when I'm not around.

My trash can has a dual flap top instead of a big lid that lifts up.
It works really well. I had a tall plastic trash can with a lift up
lid before and sometimes the lid would tip the trash can off balance
and over when it was opened fast and the trash can was basically
empty.
I found a smaller (and more expensive, apparently) one on line to show
you what I am talking about. They call it a butterfly style lid. The
lift out insides are really great, too. You can take it out and wash
it down really well if you ever have anything spill in there, not that
my kids or I would ever let anything stinky get past the plastic bag
liner we put in the kitchen trash can or anything, of course.

I've currently got a stainless steel one (that I *certainly*
did not pay $100 for!), but in the past I've been able to
find ones with bright enamel paint jobs. Sort of like this,
but a bit more stylish:

I like plastic way less than stainless steel, but there are
certainly plenty of plastic options if you don't mind the
stuff.

This looks like the black plastic bin we keep the dog food in, without a
top, here.
Came with one, but they've never gone after their own open food bags, along
with being non trash can doggies.
I trained Rudy, when he was a pup, and Boo got into things left on the
tables, but I think both Boo and Zack just went along with the 'house
rules', dominated by Rudy.
MaryBeth and her wonderdogs......yeah, right! LOL

Same here, as I posted.
Funny thing about trash compactors, (which are GREAT as long as you keep
food stuff that will get smelly out), is that no one ever really thinks of
actually *buying* one, until 'it came with our house'. Then they realize how
wonderful they are.
Had one come with our last house in NJ, but when they built our new kitchen
here, I made sure we had one put in. The contractor thought I was a bit too
free with the $$, and laughed about it, but he's since put one in his home
and his wife wouldn't live without one again! :)
They only take up about 20" or so under the counter so it's not much room to
lose, even in a smaller kitchen.
Good ta see ya, and that all the peeps and dogs are doing well. (We now have
two kitties, Hannah Bean just turned one, and Piper will be one in middle of
June, great little pals!)

Mine is stainless steel, but I don't think it looks bad. I am not in
the all stainless steel look, but touches are nice. It has a step on
pedal so I can open it more easily and the dogs have a harder time of
it. One thing I like about stainless steel is that it is too heavy
for them to knock over to try to get into it. Well, actually, the big
dogs could knock it over if they really wanted to, I'm sure, but it is
difficult enough that it hasn't been tempting to them. Mine is
rectangular in shape so it fits snug along the side of my cupboards,
out of the way, and hard to knock into or over, tall enough to hold
lots (with kids, etc., I'd be taking the trash out hourly with a small
trash can) and to never have to bend over to reach. I love it! I got
a small step can for the bathroom after Sammie the Shredder came to
live here and it works great, too.

When I renovated my kitchen, I built a cupboard specifically to contain the
garbage can.

Thanks for any input!

I'd recommend finding a trash can you like (without a swinging door) and
buying color-matched, wide strip, velcro.

That's a great idea! Have you tried it yet, though? I hear those boxers are

Not in a long time but I'm about to.

I've always had dual problems with lids whereby the Boxers would lift/move
the lid and when that wasn't good enough they'd knock the entire canister
over so the whole top popped off.
I think Pebbles put Fancy up to the whole knocking over thing because then
she got to partake of the goodies.
One of my pups is currently fascinated by the trashcan and is getting worse
with each passing day. She goes straight for the knock over & pop the top
off technique. Industrial velcro is on my list of things to buy.
