Please excuse me, I hope this is the NG to seek advices on ferrying two Cocker
Spaniels from the Midwest to Ca. I will probably be driving alone on a 18'
rented truck. First, I like to know if there are hotels/motels along the way
where I could spend a night with my two dogs. I would also like to know what I

Yes, many motels will accept dogs now. You may have to pay a
little extra for them - that depends on the motel's policy. And
reservations are advisable.
When we did a cross-country drive with two dogs two years ago, we
found dog-friendly motels on this link:

need to prepare myself and my dogs for the more than 2,500 Miles' trip without
going crazy. My dogs are not very active but, become hyper active whenever I
took them for rides once in a while. Any advice on stopping, resting, and foods.

Get your dogs used to the idea of riding by taking them for short
rides every day, several times a day. They may become excited
because it's a rare treat.
Stop and walk them - and yourself - every couple of hours.
Feed them when you normally do, and feed them their normal diet.
A sudden switch to big macs and fries could result in unpleasant
consequences. Open the cans, feed the usual portions and discard
the rest, or use a picnic cooler to keep the leftovers cold.
Offer them water every time you stop. We brought bottles of
water and a water dish.
I assume you're traveling in the summer... do not leave the dogs
in the truck, even with the windows cracked, unless it's very
early in the morning or after sundown or you're parked in dense,
large shade. It will be too hot for them. If you're traveling
alone, this may mean that you have to use drive-through
facilities to get your food, or buy your lunch early in the
morning and keep it in a cooler. This is serious advice - the
inside of a vehicle sitting in the sun heats up rapidly to
temperatures that will cause heat stroke and death, even when it
"doesn't seem all that hot" to you.
Check the above link for more advice on traveling with dogs.

IIRC, their travel guides indicate whether or not pets are
accepted at motels - check with your local office.
Good luck with your trip!
