LIKE THIS:
"Dan Moore"
Tracy,
What worked for me, in just one storm,
was to praise the dog after each clap
of thunder, telling him he's a Good Dog!
This is an almost 13 year old Doberman, BTW.
The next time it thundered, he did not even
react at all--you could not tell it was the same
dog as before.
There was more thunder just the other day,
and same thing, nada, nothing, zilch, no
cowering, whimpering, trying to hide at all,
it was that simple.
I got this idea from Jerry Howe, who might seem
to be a "wild and crazy" character, but his non-
abusive way of handling dogs WORKS.
Wonderfully.
Praise.
It's that simple.

Success!
I left for about 25 minutes, and when I returned
and walked thru the front door - no dog standing
there waiting for me! No barking, no whimpering -
no anything.
In fact, no dog!
I got worried, looking all over for her. I found
her asleep (yes, asleep!!!!) on a pile of clothing
that was on the floor in my second bedroom.
I left a tape recorder running while I was gone, but,
without realizing it, I had it set to Voice Activation -
and it hadn't been activated! I don't think she made a
sound while I was gone.
I almost feel ready to give it a big test - leave her
at home while I go to a movie, which I haven't been
able to do since I got her a little over one year ago.
Both times I employed your technique over the last couple
of days, I did so at night. Just because I need to satisfy
myself that this is real, I'm going to leave during the day
for awhile. I know you'll say it won't make any difference,
but gotta do it, gotta test it, gotta assure myself that this
is real.

Just wanted to let you know that the surrogate toy
technique is working wonders. I have not had a shredded

Okay - this is going to be a bit loooong - Lynn K.
"Put a prong collar with a six-foot leash on the dog. Don't
forget to put the muzzle on the dog. I think a prong works
better than a choke with less chance of injury to the dog in
this situation.
Electronics can be used to create an aversion to cats, but
should be used under the direction of a trainer who knows how
to instruct the owner in their proper use. Electronics can
take the form of shock, sonic or citronella collars. At that
time the owner will train with electronics instead of food or
whatever other reward system was being used."
8) Put a prong collar with a six-foot leash on the dog.
Don't forget to put the muzzle on the dog. I think a prong
works better than a choke with less chance of injury to the
dog in this situation. Have the dog in a sit-stay next to
you with most of the slack out of the leash and let the cat
walk through the room and up to the dog if it wishes (this is
why you have the dog muzzled).
If the dog makes an aggressive move towards the
cat, it must be corrected strongly with both your
voice and the collar.
This is important - the correction must be physically
very strong - not a nag. (PS: not many dogs need
to be corrected at all)."

is mental. We try to keep him out of the bedroom when he starts
getting like this. NoWay are we going to put our child in danger...
This usually seems to make matters worse.
This weekend I was outside with him in our backyard trying to play ball
with him to get him in a good mood, because he was starting to show the
signs of crazyness. As I was going back in the house he bit my leg and
broke the skin through my jeans.
We are very animal friendly vegan and vegetarians and would have never
thought of putting an animal down. . .until now. Is there an
alternative in this situation? We called the local shelters, they will
not take a dog that bites or has fear aggression. We really don't want

Well, your dog doesn't know that biting isn't okay. Until
he learns that (and at 12 years old it's probably too late
to solve the problem for good) you've got a problem.
I think it might be worth having him evaluated for cognitive
dysfunction (doggy Alzheimers) based on recent behavioral
changes, but while it's treatable the treatment takes awhile
to kick in and it tends not to last the lifetime of the
dog. Still, if you're going to have to put the dog down
you'll need to talk to your vet anyway, and it may be worth
raising the question.
|
Suggestions are more than welcome.

I'll second Ms. Shore's comment on age-related cognitive problems.
Take the dog to the vet. One of mine would startle more easily with age as
her eyesight began to go, and sometimes she would nip.

Send the kid back. It was irresponsible of you to even think of having a
child when you had a known danger in the house. The dog is part WILD
ANIMAL. COYOTES are known to be unpredictable. Being fearful is an
instinctive survival behavior.
