Hi y'all,
Jack the latest rescue a 2 yr old Pit Bull who has been here for
several months buries his chewy bones. When he first came here he was
outside more times than not and they would disappear I discovered him
burying them at a frantic pace...like a wild man. Then when I gave em
to him inside he may chew on it a minute and then walk around crying
looking for somewhere to hide it. It is sad to watch. He seems
distressed. So, I substitute toys or tiny chewies. The other day I fed
him outside and went to the spot I had left his dog dish it was pushed
a few feet away and a little castle of dirt mounded the dish and food.
I just got a glimpse of the steel bowl. What is up with that? I have
read and been told that he is worried about being hungry and needs a
back up plan. Although he never goes back to where he buries the
chewies. I was walking him and he sniffed the area but just kept
walking. Of course my other dogs can't wait to get outside and go on a
treasure hunt for whatever he has buried. He finally did go back to the
food and ate it a day later dirt and all. He was starved to the bone

I would not allow my dog to eat old, dirty food.
It sounds to me like Jack is stressed about something. Without
knowing more about your routine, it's impossible to guess what might
be stressing him. Or it could be that there is something going on
between him and the other dogs that you have not picked up on. A
third possibility is that he's not getting enough mental and
physical stimulation. Lack of stimulation can lead to weird and
undesirable behaviors. And then, there's the possibility that there
could be something wrong medically. I assume you've ruled that out?
