I am looking into buying one of these to take Maui biking (Cali's getting a
basket). Anyone have either of these? Is one better than the other?
Anyone have one and love it or hate it? Thanks for any input.

Before you use one, check out your local bylaws. In my city
it's illegal to leash your dog to a bicycle and Springers are
counted as leashes.

Just out of curiosity, why is it illegal?

Even if it's legal, I'm not sure I'd do that with a miniature or toy

Definitely a concern. I once saw a youth, on a very hot day,
pretty well towing a young Beagle behind his bicycle. After our
talk, I saw him walking his bicycle and his dog, but I've no
doubt that situation changed when I was out of sight.
Anyway, I don't know MauiJNP's full situation, so didn't address
that part of it. For all I know, she's 6 years old and will be
attaching the Springer to a tricycle. Or, maybe, she's a
responsible person and will be bicycling with care.

why not?

Because I can't imagine that a miniature or toy Poodle could keep up
with an adult human on a bicycle, at least not for very long.

I will start off slow and not go very much at first. they should gradually
be able to keep up. Plus, I plan to have them alternate so they get a break
(one will be in the basket and one on the side running). I don't plan on
biking miles on end or winning any races, just keep a steady pace. And I
won't push them to go faster or more when they are tired.

It seems like it would be a problem, if not impossible, to monitor the
short little legs and the road while you bike at the same time. Just
a short time of going faster than the dog can keep up can be
disastrous. You would be dragging the dog along as it road-burns,
right?

Cali and I went on a trail today with my bike. She started in the
basket in front but after riding 3 miles along the trail, I decided to get
Cali out of the basket and let her run next to me. She ended up doing more
than I thought she would and we didn't have any problems. She ran almost
1/2 mile at a slow steady pace and didn't try to go close to the tires at
all. I was going pretty slow for her, she was running but just barely. And
if she slowed down she had enough slack to do that as well. We practically
had the trail to ourselves so I had no problems keeping my eyes on her and
not crashing. We did pretty much the same thing yesterday except she only
ran with me for about 3 minutes in the park and got a ride for the other
hour. In the basket, she really seems to have a good time. She sits at
first and lets the wind blow on her face. She doesn't get scared even when
we have a bumpy trail and she never tries to get out of the basket (which
she is clipped into just in case). After a while she lays down and peeks
out the side window. After doing that for a few minutes, she takes a nap.
I guess next time I need to try Maui in the basket but I don't see him being
such a good basket rider so I am not sure how that will work out.
