montana wildhack...
We got up early and took the hour drive to the fair (it is the oldest
in Ohio). All the midway vendors, etc. were closed, thank goodness!

Got there in time to buy pancake breakfasts at the Grange building,
where they give you pitchers of local maple syrup to take back to the
table with you. (Sally knows this, but not everyone else lives in Maple
Syrple land). After drowning any possible sorrows in real maple syrup,
we set off to look at all the animal barns and every other permanent
fixture on the fairgrounds.

I loved everything from the pygmy goats to the Domestic Arts building.
We got to see some of the dressage and jumping competitions. We got to
talk with some of the 4H kids. Going early was wonderful and we were
outta there at noon, as everyone else came streaming in.

I kept noting, as we walked down the "midway," through every kind of
fair food imaginable (although I didn't notice any ostrich burgers),
through all of the fantastic odors, that I was grateful we'd had enough
maple syrup to make us immune to everything else.

We hope to go to the maple festival next spring, because I haven't been
to one since I was a kid. And if we go back to the fair, we're going to
get there even earlier!

Thanks for putting the idea in my mind. And have I mentioned maple
syrup often enough?

sighthounds & siberians...
Heh. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, Geauga County is maple syrup land.

Marcel Beaudoin...
Ahem, eastern Canada is maple syrup land. Everywhere else is pretenders.

We just got home a bit ago, after enjoying cavatelli with homemade
meatballs from Corbo's in Little Italy, and a funnel cake of course.
My only complaint was that although I saw a great many wonderful draft
horses, I did not get my hands on any horseflesh.

montana wildhack...
DH ate the funnel cake. The maple syrup left me immune to its siren
call. Sure did smell good, though.

Going early meant that I got to talk with animal owners, who let me
touch their charges (or feed them treats) if I asked. Basically, nobody
was there who wasn't a participant.

We are big fans of real maple syrup and very rarely use anything else.
It's so expensive that we don't have it frequently, so being given such
a large amount was fabu!

And when in Maple Syrup Land...

sighthounds & siberians...
Act like a pancake? In this house, I'm the only one who prefers real
maple syrup. That's okay; more for me, which means it also isn't that
expensive, since I'm the only one using it.

Going early was definitely a wise decision. When we went this
afternoon, the vehicles were lined up quite a ways down Claridon-Troy
Road. I don't know whether a huge number of people suddenly realized
today was the last day, or whether the crowds were due to the weather
on Saturday and Sunday.

It's a good fair.
