Martin Elliget...
Those with ancestors from Great Britain may be interested in the
Surname Profiler developed by the University College London.

It shows the geographical distribution of a selected surname, both for
1881 and 1998.

The site was highlighted in a story in The Times a few days ago and
was sometimes unavailable then but seems to be ok now.

Charani...
They're slow getting that story. It's about a year old now.

Martin Elliget...
Yeah, when searching for the article online, I did notice that the
same story had been recycled from one reported earlier in the year.

There have been concerns raised about the organisation who supplied
the data being a credit checking agency. It's a site that needs to be
treated with a degree of caution because it has been found to be
highly inaccurate for some names (usually the less common), but spot
on with others (usually the more common).

The 1881 data has been replotted to use the current post code areas
rather than the original geographic areas in order to get something
approaching a comparison.
