I'd like some advice in relation to what answer I should give to Q 18 on the
Census. While I've lived in Australia for 50 years, I was born in NZ, as
were my parents and grandparents. Of my 8 great grandparents, two emigrated
from Ireland to NZ in 1875, one from England before 1880 and one from
Scotland abt 1860. Back to the 16 2x GGPs, 6 were from Scotland, 5 from
Ireland, and 5 from England. Which two ancestries do I put on the Census
form? Does NZ classify as an ancestry (other)? I'm tending towards putting
NZ and Ireland, but would be grateful for your views, and am a bit surprised
that the local genie societies haven't put out any info on this question as
well as Q 60, as far as I know. My husband was born in England of an
Australian father and an English mother, while he father was working there -
he returned to Australia aged 1. His mother's ancestors were all English,
and on his father's side his 2x GGPs were English (4), Welsh (1),
Scottish(2) and America(1) who emigrated to Victoria in the 1850s - so the
second and third parts of my question are, what is (b) his ancestry, an (c)
the ancestry of our Australian born children? English + ?

I've read through all these census discussions with interest, but I just
have to ask - is there no option for British rather than the separate
constituent countries? Hell, I was born in England, but various of my

ancestors came from Wales, Scotland or Ireland. My nationality -
Yorkshire, or course, but if I have to tick a box, I'm British.

At the time all these people emigrated to Australia, the Union had taken
place and the country was called Great Britain.
