could anyone give me any ideas on how to approach this? I am trying to
find a birth record for a Katie Short, who was born in Moama on 17/6/1878,
died 23/6/1949, married William Mitchell McHutchison on 23/6/1949. I have
her marriage certificate, which states she was born in N.S.W. The dates were
supplied by my cousin who has them in the family bible. I can find and
verify all the details except her birth. I cannot find anything at all in
N.S.W. or Vic., or even anything that could come close. Any ideas
appreciated.

I would expect she is perhaps an unregistered birth from the following couple:-
William SHORT b. Dublin; m. 1875 in VIC to Catherine Augusta HICKEY

Has anyone searched the births just using
the mother's maiden name ???

Try looking up variations and wrong spelling
Shore for example.
That's usually the way it goes. It would be unusual for someone to be just
missing when all other siblings are there. Something might have happened
and the parents forgot to register.
I know the birthrate dropped sharply around that time because compulsory
schooling was coming in and parents were worried if they would be able to

afford the schooling. Could have been registrations dropping sharply too.
All speculation of course, maybe (probably) wrong.
