I've been searching through web-search etc for the answer to this question, =
and have not yet been able to find the answer. Maybe someone here knows =
or can point me to relevant sources.
Who made the original decision to destroy Australian census returns? =
And, more importantly, what were the reasons for the decision?

Hi Lindsay,
Federal Parliamentarians in the Census and Statistics Act 1905. You can
There's probably a history of the Act in an Australian Year Book, but
the debates would be recorded in Hansard, if you're keen to know. (Or is
this for a triva night at the Embassy?)
Or it might be part of the folk lore in the ABS head office in Canberra
- try contacting the ABS librarian (they are sure to have one with a
much more technical name
My sources tell me there were not so many Jedi Knights in the last
Census. :-(
