Wolthuis

I am seeking information about my grandfather Paul J Wolthuis born in
1885 in the Netherlands, immigrated to the U.S. in 1905. His brother
Mathew Barney was born 1n 1895
and immigrated to Calgary Alberta. I think they may be from Friesland,
but am not sure.
I cannot find them in Genlias or Germeentearchief. I am tryinf to find
their parents and where they came from. I also know only about six
words of Dutch.

Hi Joan,

No problem, you can write in English. Are you sure about the
immigration date? The Ellis Island records name a Paul J Wolthuis who
immigrated in 1920, at the age of 34. That person's wife was called

Not everyone entering the US through Ellis Island is an immigrant.
In this case, Paul J. is a naturalized US citizen (since 1914),
living in Miles City, Montana. Immigration was probably (many) years
before that. His wife Lena was American by birth (born 18 Sept. 1891
in Iowa).

If you look at the top of the ship manifest on Ellis Island records,
you see that this page was actually a list of US citizens returning to
the US, not immigrants.
