Bitstreams...
I've been using Genesreunited for my tree thus far, but it doesn't give
me any workable solutions for printing. Specifically, I want Timeline
prints and a tree print that will include notes.

So which is the best Genealogy software out there? What are your
recommendations?

I believe Master Genealogist is very highly thought of, but it is rather
complex and there is a *lot* to learn when using it. It might be more
powerful than you want/need.

I use Legacy and find it *excellent*. Cannot recommend it too highly.
There is a free version which is quite adequate and good for trying out
the program - for as long as you want. If you decide you'd like the
bells and whistles the de Luxe version is not very expensive and the
upgrade is seamless. There is a very useful Legacy Mailing List.

Having had some experience of it I would *not* recommend Family Tree
Maker, although many people like it. I don't think it encourages a very
professional approach and has certain features which I positively loathe
- such as not entering forenames and surnames separately and the ID
numbers not being visible and accessible from the "top level".

When I first began genealogy I test-drove several programs which offer
free trials or free versions and that's how I settled for Legacy. I
began with the free one and then upgraded.

If you want to move your GEDCOM between your PC program and Genes Reunited,
bear in mind that Family Tree Maker's GEDCOM export is poor compared to
Legacy's. (FTM permits only one field for event place and/or description
and will export it as place - not useful if you used it for the person's
occupation, for example. Most others have separate fields. FTM also does
not export media tags, so pictures are locked within it.)
Same with me, and very happy with Legacy.

The best genealogical software is the one that suits you best.

You'll get recommendations for all the different software programs.

My recommendation would be to try as many different one as you can.
Some are free, some are available on a trial period.

I use Legacy. It does what I want, it's easy to use and it's free.

You sometimes get problems exporting a GEDCOM from Legacy if you do not
select the right GEDCOM settings.

You can upgrade to the paid for DeLuxe version if you wish.

I don't like PAF, which is also free others love it.

You've been given some very good advice.

Along the same lines, I'd add that I always say to people who ask "which is
the best Genealogy software", would they ask anyone "which is the best car"?
I suspect not! And there would certainly be no single answer!

I'll add some comments.
1. There are free demonstration versions of many genealogical programs -
well worth trying.
2. A web search will find comparison tables of various genealogical
programs.
3. It is not a bad idea to try out a couple of free, or shareware, programs
with a small subset of your data in order to see whether they have the
features you would like.
4. I use "The Master Genealogist" - probably the most powerful program
available but certainly not the easiest to learn. However, one thing to
bear in mind is that, if you start out with another program and then decide
that you would like to convert to a more powerful program, TMG is surely
tops in terms of transportability. It is not restricted to use of GEDCOMs
but, instead, via its "Genbridge" can import data directly from most of the
popular genealogical programs. See:
