Hello all,
I've found an IGI reference to a marriage that might be one of my
ancestors. According to my current knowledge however she should be a widow
at the time of this marriage, which lists her by her maiden name.
The wedding occurred at St. Anne's Soho, Westminster in 1803. Does
anyone know if the practice at the time was for widows to remarry under
their maiden name, or do I have the wrong marriage record here?

I remember reading somewhere that family names of the peerage etc would
pass down the female line if there was no son with issue?

Hi Norrette,
Thanks for the reply- alas, no landed families here. Ms. Ann
Robertson was a daughter of Peter Robertson, bookbinder of Fetter Lane in
London. The father of her first child, George (shown on his baptismal
record at age 10) was John Wiggin, believed to be a descendent of Gabriel
Wiggin(s) of Stepney.
The marriage record I've found is of Ann Robertson to Robert Ross,
bookseller & stationer (which is correct and is "mine." Robert Ross later
signed a letter to George's son, "your affectionate Grandfather" and Ann
was married to Robert at the time she took her son George to be baptised.)
At this point, it's looking more and more as if poor George may have
been born out of wedlock. Ann's marriage to Robert in a parish other than
her own (St. Clement Danes) and the delayed baptism of her son in still
another parish seem to support this.

So perhaps your ancestor never took on her husbands surname in the first
place?

Thanks for any help!

Widows would normally marry under their late husband's surname,
however, she might have married someone with the same name as hers.
Is the IGI reference an extraction or a patron submission? If the
former then it can generally be relied on to be accurate. If it's
latter, then treat with extreme caution.

It is an extraction and I generally agree with the caution regarding
"member submissions."
Thanks for the reply- mayhaps my ancestor in question never did marry the
proven father of her first child.
