kathleen spencer...
Hello All
I recently enquired about a 'List of Apothecaries"
London
The person who had access to the list, in Australia, no longer appears to be
online.

By searching the web I have found there is a list on microfiche covering the period
between 1815-1840, which would cover the time period but these actual dates
are not shown on A2A.
Can anyone offer assistance as to how I could access these records ?

Quote:
The Society of Genealogists list the following publications on microfiche:
M017: Medical directory 1847. 6 fiche - £4.10 (£3.49 exc. VAT)
M018: Medical register 1779. 3 fiche - £2.50 (£2.13 exc. VAT)
M019: List of apothecaries 1815-40. 3 fiche - £2.50 (£2.13 exc. VAT)

Prices might be out of date.

University libraries may be able to help, searching
for the key words PROFESSION and INSTITUTION.
In the 19th century most skilled occupations created
their permanent societies with legal power (that continue
to this day, one way or another): and the
history of this process became very popular/fashionable
among sociologists 1950-2000 so plenty of research
papers were published: and their footnotes will tell
you what sources were available.

A quicker route might be to email Dee Cook, archivist to the Society of
Apothecaries, on archivist@apothecaries.org.

When I contacted her in 2002 she was extremely helpful, and gave me much
more information than I knew she had, at no charge.

Best wishes

Hi Kate,

If you stick "apothecaries" in the search engine of the State Library of
New South Wales (which is in Sydney, of course) you will find a plethora
of material on the subject, including the microfiche index you
originally enquired about.

Best wishes,
