Difference between?

Am sure its been asked - and answered - before but I failed to make a
note of it, so can SKS please explain the difference between the terms
'Boarder' and 'Lodger' on census returns. A 3xgreat granduncle's

A boarder eats there, a lodger merely sleeps there.

Well way back when I was into that caper as a boarder,
I got a room, bed and meals, whereas the lodger only
got the room and bed - no meals.

occupation column indicates it could read 'House' and your comments

Hence the phrase, "board and lodging". "Board" meaning provision of
food.

"Boarder" gets its connection with food because it derives from one meaning
of "board" which is "table". I must admit that, up to a couple of weeks ago
when a similar question popped up here, I'd no idea what the difference
was. I'd assumed they were interchangeable until I found both at the same
address. Laziness on my part - not unusual - for not checking the
dictionary.
