Am sure its been asked - and answered - before but I failed to make a
note of it, so can SKS please explain the difference between the terms
'Boarder' and 'Lodger' on census returns. A 3xgreat granduncle's

Well way back when I was into that caper as a boarder,
I got a room, bed and meals, whereas the lodger only
got the room and bed - no meals.

"Boarder" gets its connection with food because it derives from one meaning
of "board" which is "table". I must admit that, up to a couple of weeks ago
when a similar question popped up here, I'd no idea what the difference
was. I'd assumed they were interchangeable until I found both at the same
address. Laziness on my part - not unusual - for not checking the
dictionary.
