Wee Peem...
Whilst researching my family history I came across something unusual.
I was looking for marriage in the early 1800's. I did find the requird rcord
and not surprisingly one of the witnesses shared the name so good chance a
relative. As I continued to view the folowing records the same name cropped
up as witness to many marriages.
I can only presume one thing....this person was somehow involved with the
church ( and not just loitering around for weeks on end at weddings :-) )

Is there any way to find out whether this person was in effect an employee

Peter Goodey...
This is not uncommon. I would have said that you had already determined
this, so far as it's worth doing. If you really wanted to take it
further, check the church records (not the registers).

of the church?

Jeff...
If you Email the church concerned I'm certain they'll have a list of
incumbents, curates, parish clerks, churchwardens etc.

In my case I was quite excited to find several family weddings witnessed
by William Powell (allegedly, I'm afraid incorrectly, Handel's
Harmonious Blacksmith)

I liked the idea of him being a family friend, but it turned out he was
the Parish Clerk, and witnessed scores of marriages.
