John Nile according to the 41 & 51 cencus was born 1804 Plymouth,
Devon. I have found a John Nile born 1798 christened 1801 Stoke
Damerel, Plymouth. Do you think this is my John Nile as the dates dont

If so, if it was from 1837 onwards get the marriage cert which will give
the fathers' names which will help you narrow you search.
If before 1837 get the Parish Register entry. There will be two
witnesses - often parents or siblings.
As others have said (or implied) the Stoke Demerel record is almost
certainly NOT your man.
