National Probate Index

I called in at my local Probate office today to order a will, and the
asistant told me that plans are well advanced to put images of the
indexes up to 1960 online, and to make it possible to order wills
online. Apparently they were aiming for this summer though he doubted
it would be on time.

Does anyone else know any more details?

Doesn't anyone know anything about this? If true it would be one of
the most exciting events in online genealogy since, well, since
Ancestry put images of the BMD indexes online and allowed us to search
them for free.

A little picky of me but more accurate to say "since the
Free BMD volunteer project transcribed the indexes and made
them available free, which Ancestry then also made
available"

Actually I was talking about the images of the actual books rather
than the FreeBMD index. These are also available on Ancestry and,
unlike the FreeBMD index, are complete and available up to 1983.

Bit confused by this one. They're certainly there post-1983 but the
pre-1983 appears to be the FreeBMD indexes.
