Reference 107 2384, Stranton in Durham

Wm Metcalfe, 28 is living with his wife Jane, 21 (nee Braithwaite - I know
this from a birth certificate of one of their future children).

There are a number of lodgers with them and 3 of them share a name that (I
think) starts with S and ends with 'waite'.

Ancestry had deciphered this as Satterthwaite. I can't see how the name can
be Satterthwaite as I can't see any evidence of the double t. However, I
can't work out what it might be. Any ideas?

Liz,

boseley...
There is a place near Huddersfield called Slaithwaite, a complete guess, but
there are surnames of the same.

I think it's Smurthwaite - there are loads in the local area.

Morever, if you fast-forward to the 1861 Census you'll find Richard and
Margery (with sons Anthony and William) still living in Stranton. [RG9/3703
folio 69 page 16] Fast-forward again to 1871 and you'll find Margery (now
a widow) still living there. [RG10/4921 folio 102 page 42]

Cheers,
Dave

Many thanks for this Dave. I had tried a quick search for Satterthwaite
but had not had any luck so I was back to trying to read the writing. You
seem to have cracked it, thanks.
