JohnB...
Having had a great deal of help after my initial post, I thought I'd
push my luck and look for a little help with the above family line.

My wife's mother was born Margaret Emily Mawdsley in June 1916 in
Liverpool, her parents being Frank Mawdsley and Emily nee Hayes (sp?).
Emily always said she was born in Hope which is between Wrexham and
Mold in N Wales. There was also a brother, Harold, who married Nell.

Trouble is I haven't yet found anyone in census or birth records that I
can make a positive connection with. Can anyone point me in the right
direction?

Jenny M Benson...
My sister is researching Heys, but I don't think her people have any
connection with North Wales. The name is spelled a variety of ways,
even within the same family: Heys, Heyes, Hays, Hayes.

FreeBMD has two Emily Hayes born in Wrexham, 1861 and 1882. Have you
tried either of them?

JohnB...
The latter might be a possibility - we think the date of birth should
be 1886 but have no proof.

Charani...
People weren't as positive about their ages as we are today. It
wasn't as important. Even in the census you need to allow for a
margin of error in ages - and in places of birth!!

It makes me wonder sometimes that other people can use the same
searches I am and get better results! I am sure I entered the name
into FreeBMD and got nothing in Wrexham :-)

Charani...
Try using wild cards. That sometimes helps.

JohnB...
Aha! Found the marriage on FreeBMD, Sep 1911. My wife also told me
that Emily Hayes' birthday was 27 April and she's fairly certain it was
1884. However, searching FreeBMD , that gives us no options in N Wales
but one possible in West Derby which is where the marriage took place.
Hmmm. Now we need to see if we can link the two or whether there's
some mis-information involved!

The dates given in FreeBMD - are these the days the event was
registered rather than the date the event took place?

Phil C....
Can't help much but there's a coincidence. I've got Mawdsleys by
marriage and I just happened to look the name up yesterday in Cottle's
Dictionary of Surnames. I'd always assumed the name was Scorttish but
it seems to be Lancs in origin. According to -
- they seem to have got about a bit by 1998. Mine was a butler in
Coupar Angus m.1856. I'd always assumed his father (a farmer) was
Scottish but perhaps not.

JohnB...
Coincidences abound. Frank Mawdsley was also "in service" working as
chauffeur/gardener at Maesmor Hall in N Wales from 1921 - 1937 before
illness forced him to return to Liverpool with his family.

Mawdsley is a village in Lancashire between Ormskirk and Preston. I
assume that's where the family name comes from. There stll seem to be
Mawdsleys in the NorthWest than anywhee else.

All help grtefully received.
