Fenny...
I've just found one of my ggrandfathers in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.
According to this information, he was born on the Isle of Zante, Greece in
approx 1826.

According to family legend, which are completely uncorroborated, his
father was in the army and was alleged to have fought at Waterloo. What
campaigns were going on in Greece in the 1820s that he may have been
stationed there?

Don Aitken...
Zante was not then part of Greece - it is one of the Ionian Islands,
which were a British protectorate from 1815 to 1863. British troops
were stationed on the islands throughout that period. Zante is the
Italian version of the name - it is now called Zakinthos.

Personally, I wouldn't have a clue where it was. I'm going by what it
says on the census listing. But thanks for the info. It all helps with
piecing things together.
